If not for the fact that Alexis had been intent on blocking his way with her body, Kay would've called her disappearing act a useful trick. He weighed the possibility that a loud noise might be reason enough to step over the threshold, but in the end decided to err on the side of caution.

He was still waiting on the sidewalk outside when Alexis came stomping back, visibly annoyed. "Inconvenient," Kay observed. "And potentially damaging. Were you injured?" Not that he could do anything about it now. "Or were the owners difficult about the whole thing?" The clothing shop's upper floor was, from what he'd understood, a restricted area.
