"Scaffold," Orso blurted out before he could stop himself. "Block is where they, uh, chop heads off. There's also pyres? And high places." He swallowed, embarrassed, and let her continue.

To her credit, his dagger-wielding saviour seemed unruffled. "Will it? Oh, good. And, ah, what is--"

A man bumped into Orso from behind but clasped his hand to steady him. It happened so fast that Orso barely had time to react. Yet when he looked down, he found himself holding an item entirely like the one he'd just been shown.

"I... I didn't even catch..." He blinked. "How did you know...?"
