Not even those ones seem to know anything. That or they're keeping it to themselves. But they all seem as frustrated as the rest of us so probably not.

I'm... just trying to keep it all straight in my head. The job, the disappearances, the new weird stuff. Still shaking off some of the old. And now that people seem more interested it's a lot harder to track Tommy.

I don't know. Maybe I just need to chill out. I could morph Hamish again, and you can braid my hair again, if you want. That was fun.

Tommy's a Local. He's a punk that used to be normal, but now he's dodging everybody and instead of graffity-ing he sneaks off to the woods and does weird stuff. I'm pretty sure some of it's magic, or him trying to do magic. I've been keeping an eye on him but it's hard, he's really secretive about it.

That sounds pretty cool. And yeah. It'd probably be good to stop for a minute.

I'm eighteen now, I don't get guardians any more.

Seeing into the future isn't always simple. Maybe it takes just a twitch of a hair to change. Maybe the future they see is uncertain, there is no use in panicking everyone unless you are absolutely sure what's about to come.

Want company? I could shift into a wolf and be inconspicuous?

You could be a viking bull. I might give you a mohawk down your whole body.

Actually I think the rules with MIST are that anyone under 21 has to have a guardian.

Yeah. That's what other people say. But I've found people panic a lot worse when they have no idea what's happening. At least with an idea they won't run into a fire by mistake.

Sure. Though he's really paranoid about it. Luckily he mostly goes out at night though. I'm usually out of ear shot but I can perch in the trees and watch him.

That sounds pretty good. You have to make sure to get a picture.

Oh. Um. I guess I'm back to Eddie, then. But he's not really a guardian and didn't sign up for the program, I don't think. He just looks out for me as a friend.

That's where we come in, we keep them from running into the fire ahead. It's part of the responsibility you have with great power. Because sometimes if they know the fire is ahead, they still run towards it.

I'm good at hiding in the shadows as a wolf, especially at night.

I'll give you the best photoshoot, I promise. People will think I'm having you put in a stud magazine.

Yeah. And recon. That was my job back when I got stuck. I'm better at it now that I can morph things that look more in place indoors. Maybe I could go up with you as Dude, my cat morph. As long as you don't eat him or something, he's an expert at stealth too.

It'll be awesome because I can pose. As long as I'm not drooling or something. He's a drooler.

I mean- yeah, totally. That'd be great. It you wanted to, I mean. I just didn't want to... I'm bad at asking. ~~Or risk you being taken away too, I seem to be bad luck.~~ Too used to looking after myself, I guess.

He's gray and black, kind of striped. His underside's white but when he crouches you can't see it. He was my cat back home, and the first morph any of us acquired or tried. He could work the shadows like nothing else. ...I use him to sneak into the town hall meetings and stuff, sometimes. That's how I first heard about Tommy acting weird. His eyes and hearing are awesome, and his nose isn't bad either. Not as good as a dog, but still pretty good.

Yeah, I'm still not really used to having anybody there. It's easier to accept here, I guess. Knowing we're all in the same boat and that all of us have different skills to contribute with. I'll be honest, neither am I. You just need someone who will check in on you, not wait for you to come to them. What have you stopped doing? Does that mean you want me as backup?

Oh. No, he's nothing like an orange. He hunts and is pretty stealthy and stuff, but he's not running around or going crazy or anything. My uncle wouldn't have ever let me keep him if he was.

"Stopped taking the lead". I was trying to figure out what to say and hit send instead of delete. Talons and paws can be tricky to type with. All I meant was, I was a good sentry but I'm a lousy leader, so I've stopped trying. And everyone treats me like an alarmist and a kid so, I've pretty much shut up, too. I just do what I'm good at and use my battle morphs if somebody's in trouble. Or Dude, if I need to sneak.

I've met a few of the breeds. They have like... built-in personalities, whether or not they're feral. But yeah, oranges are crazy. And they always want to climb or attack. Lots of energy, I guess. I think Dude was a Calico? Still pretty active and a great hunter, but way better at stealth and doesn't get excited as much.

Yeah. You'd probably get some weird spellings of screeches or something. The talons work if I make a knuckle, but it still takes a while. If I'm in my human form it's a lot easier, but...

No, but, thanks. I'll reach out to him and just check in. I just panicked when I didn't see him at the party the other night, after Filip and Thor both got sent... wherever. We usually check in when he teaches me how to cook something super healthy and we have dinner together. Less now, that he doesn't live at Pickman, but still sometimes.
