For me, I tried to do a mix of trying to emulate canon and doing something totally new. I think I like the idea of the kind of impact the memories will have on those who aren't necessarily like their canon counterparts. For example, with Toma, I gave her an actual family that really loves her despite not really fitting in with them. So to find out she murders Calla/Lily in canon is going to be kind of devastating in a way that I'm not sure it would be if I'd made her as much of a loner lacking love as Tom Riddle was in canon.
One that's drastically different is one I haven't finished the app for yet. Hunter is the Dunhaven version of Dean Winchester and he's training to be an Olympic rower which means he's pretty straight and narrow, totally clean, and focused because he has Big Dreams. Dean...is not these things. I think it will be interesting to see Hunter reconcile this and it's also going to be hilarious because Dean would be so pissed to be these things in another life, lolol.
With Charlie/Leia, I tried to take her personality traits and apply them in a way that made sense in this context. For example, I have her getting into trouble a lot like she does in pre-movie canon, but usually it's always with some political agenda motivating her mischievousness. She's very much Charlie, but Leia is very evident in there, too.
I think both ways of going about making the AU have their merits and it's SO fun finding ways to make brand new characters while still keeping the things that make our canon characters awesome.
