Jack had been thinking about proposing for some time. Definitely since before Jude and Mari had begun their game of engagement chicken. While he had no doubt that he and Phoebe could be just as ridiculous at times, that wasn’t really the route he wanted to take. So he took his time, and started dropping hints to her. When she didn’t laugh the idea off, he began to get more invested. He started brainstorming. He wasn’t a “get down on one knee in a restaurant” kind of guy. However, he did want her to know that he’d put some major thought into it. Finally the idea came to him. Animal Crossing had been something that meant a lot to the both of them in recent months. If this worked out, it would become even more special to them. He took a big risk planning during one of her Twitch streams. She had a big following of fans, and if this didn’t work out, he’d be mocked and discussed on the internet for at least a couple of hours. Until something better came along. But Jack had decided it was “go big or go home.” The majority of her fans knew who he was by this time. He’d made several guest appearances to play along with her or just crash in to say hi. So when he suggested that she come visit his Island during her stream that day, it didn’t seem too obvious or out of the blue. He had her stream running on his laptop while he had Animal Crossing loaded up on his Switch. The gates were open, and he nervously awaited her arrival. "All right, buds," Phoebe was saying, adjusting in her seat as she leaned in toward her microphone just a bit. She had a bright smile on her face, just as she usually tended to when she was streaming -- and when she wasn't streaming, if she was perfectly honest. Phoebe's on screen persona wasn't all that different from who she was in her everyday. She found it too exhausting to be anything else. She had been playing an awful lot of Animal Crossing on stream since the game had come out, having had to force herself to play some Overwatch during the previous couple of days just to have some variety and keep her followers engaged. Today, however, she had been happy to dip back into the easy-going atmosphere that was her village that she had put a lot of time and effort into building up both on and off stream. After doing her chores and showing her viewers the little projects she was working on, she had started to beeline it toward the airport. "Jack has invited us over for a visit and I just can't turn down such an offer." As she hurried through the prompts and waited through the cut scene, Phoebe's attention was split between the game and taking some time to interact with chat. It was an easy routine, one that she had come to love since she had taken off on Twitch. It made her especially happy that Jack had weaved into that routine so easily. He might not have been in every stream she did, either through just playing games together in their respective homes or with him right next to her, but she liked that it was an option. He had become a part of her life almost effortlessly and she had to think if ever there was a good sign that he was meant to be in her life, that was one of them. "Jack's island is way better than mine," Phoebe said as the game loaded and his island appeared on her screen. She quirked a smile, glancing up to the camera as she assumed Jack was watching. "I have nefarious plans to steal half his villagers." Of course he grinned at the comment. He set his Switch aside to type a response. First of all- how dare you. Your island is amazing and perfect, just like you. A series of “aww” reactions quickly followed, before he continued. And secondly. You will steal Julian over my cold, dead body.” The flight information faded off his screen and he was greeted with an image of Phoebe’s character making her way through the airport. His character greeted her with a smile and a wave. He was dressed in a vampire outfit, which was the closest thing he had in his inventory to a suit. Besides, who didn’t love a good cape, really? Continuing under the guise that this was a completely normal excursion, Jack led Phoebe and her followers on a tour of his island. With one or both of them occasionally fielding questions from the chat. It was relaxing and fun and helped calm some of his jitters regarding what he was about to do. With all but one particular part of his island left un-explored, Jack typed “Follow me!” into the in-game chat. ”Special surprise this way :D” With that, he led Phoebe to the northeast corner of his Island. He’d spent the last few days getting it ready. He’d cleared an entire area out and had decorated it to resemble the Dunhaven dog park where so many of their early meetings and not-dates had taken place. Custom designed paw prints criss crossed on the grass and he’d meticulously planted all of her favorite flowers. Directly in the middle of the park, Jack had spelled out Will you marry me? in the grass. A small table was to the right of the question mark. On it rested a rose in a vase, along with a gold nugget. ...He couldn’t actually locate a ring in the game, so he’d had to make do with what he had available. He stood off to the side and watched the screen to take in Phoebe’s reaction as she realized what this was all about. Phoebe dutifully followed Jack around his island, enjoying all of the little changes and updates he had made and getting to show it -- and him, even in Animal Crossing form -- off to her viewers. When he mentioned a surprise, she followed him just as quickly, all the while smiling as she said, "I do like a good surprise." She hadn't known what to expect, but seeing the Dunhaven dog park made her heart warm, as well as made her wonder why she hadn't thought of doing that herself. But what Phoebe really hadn't expected was the flurry of commotion as her Twitch chat started to explode. She took her eyes off the game for just a moment to glance in the direction of the wild scrolling as messages popped up, then back to the screen and read exactly what had crossed her screen as she'd walked further into Jack's park. It took a moment for Phoebe's brain to catch up and understand exactly what she was reading -- that she was reading a proposal. When Jack had brought up getting married someday in the past, even as a joke, she had always warmed to the idea. She might have joked back, but she hadn't rebuked it by any means because she very much liked the idea of being married to Jack someday and was looking forward to it happening. She hadn't necessarily expected a proposal, and she definitely hadn't expected one in that moment, but that didn't mean she felt anything other than excitement as a giant grin lit up her features. "Are you serious?" It wasn't the traditional response, but she couldn't help as it slipped out while she looked into her camera, suddenly wishing she'd have told him to come over for this visit. He was only one house down from where she was currently sitting, the coincidence and convenience of them being neighbors. One they had enjoyed a great deal since the start of their relationship. Not waiting for any kind of in game response, Phoebe continued, "Wait -- don't answer that, Jack." Then, still staring into her camera, she continued, "I love you all, but you're going to have to forgive me for ending the stream early so I can go tell that man yes in person." She blew a kiss at the camera, ended the stream with a couple clicks, and didn't even hesitate before taking off through the house, inspiring some barks from the dogs, and out the front door to Jack's house. He pressed his lips together tightly and held his breath when the viewers saw it before she did. His eyes were absolutely glued to his screen, watching and waiting for her to see it. When she did, and that smile he loved so much lit up her entire face, he breathed a sigh of relief. Are you serious? He had to laugh at that. He’d been leaning forward to answer her through the chat when she ordered him not to. When she stood up, he followed suit and set down his Switch. As the stream ended abruptly, he ran a hand through his hair, tried to contain his smile, and hurried to the front door. When he opened it, he could see her bounding up the steps. “Run here, did you?” He couldn’t help but grin as he pulled the ring box out of his pocket. As she stopped in front of him, he got down on one knee. “Be my player two?” It took every ounce of willpower within Phoebe to not throw her arms around Jack, even before he had the chance to get down on one knee -- but she was very glad she'd had found that willpower, if only to see him do that. This was not how she had imagined this day would go, not in the slightest. Her life wasn't exactly dictated by routine, but it would have been impossible for her to have predicted "proposal", let alone the perfection that was "proposal on Animal Crossing", from this man when she'd crawled out of bed to let the dogs out. And yet, here she was. Phoebe's heart felt impossibly full and the grin that had already been on her face softened, warm and loving. Phoebe took a step forward and then dropped to her own knees, joining him on the ground. She could have given an answer and waited until he stood up, but she had never claimed to be a patient person -- especially not with things like this. She raised her hands, each coming to cup his face between them. "Obviously," she responded (still not giving the traditional response, but when had she ever been traditional, really?) before leaning in and stealing a kiss. |
