I meant to address this on Friday, but it's been a crazy weekend playing music for Leslie Odom Jr to sing to (what is my life??) and I only now had a chance to even think about the internet. But Friday was National Violin Day and given that the vast majority of my life is spent playing said instrument, I felt like it was worth mentioning.
I was six when my parents started me on violin lessons. It took me many years to understand and appreciate that, as I was too young to really realize just how much they sacrificed to give me those opportunities early on, which gave me a foundation that basically blossomed into an eventual career that I am so incredibly lucky to have. Education in the arts is always under attack in our world in one way or another, simply due to funding not being there as it should be. It might sound cliche, but being able to lean on music during my adolescent years saved me in a number of ways.
So, if you ever find yourself free on nights that the local schools have concerts with the band, orchestra, or choir programs, might I suggest attending and showing support to the kids? Not everyone realizes just how much having one more additional hand clapping in the audience means when on stage at that age. For all you know, you could be applauding the next Yo-Yo Ma or Hilary Hahn.
