"It's obvious, isn't it?" "What's obvious?" "I know what you are." "What do you mean?" "You're... you're a witch." "That's not a very nice thing to say to somebody!" "It is real, isn't it? It's not a joke? Petunia says you're lying to me. Petunia says there isn't a Hogwarts. It is real, isn't it?" "It's real for us. Not for her. But we'll get the letter, you and me." "Really?" "Definitely." "Does it make a difference, being Muggle-born?" "No. It doesn't make any difference." "-you think I want to be a - a freak?" "I'm not a freak. That's a horrible thing to say." "That's where you're going. A special school for freaks. You and that Snape boy... weirdos, that's what you two are. It's good you're being separated from normal people. It's for our safety." "Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" "My whole family have been in Slytherin." "Blimey, and I thought you seemed all right!" "Maybe I'll break the tradition. Where are you heading, if you've got the choice?" "'Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart!' Like my dad. Got a problem with that?" "No. If you'd rather be brawny than brainy-" "Where're you hoping to go, seeing as you're neither?" "Come on, Severus, let's find another compartment." "Oooooo..." "See ya, Snivellus!" "Evans, Lily!" "Gryffindor!" "...thought we were supposed to be friends? Best friends?" "We are, Sev, but I don't like some of the people you're hanging round with! I'm sorry, but I detest Avery and Mulciber! Mulciber! What do you see in him, Sev, he's creepy! D'you know what he tried to do to Mary Macdonald the other day?" "That was nothing. It was a laugh, that's all-" "It was Dark Magic, and if you think that's funny-" "Saved? Saved? You think he was playing the hero? He was saving his neck and his friends' too! You're not going to- I won't let you-" "Let me? Let me?" "I didn't mean- I just don't want to see you made a fool of- He fancies you, James Potter fancies you! And he's not... everyone thinks… big Quidditch hero-" "I know James Potter's an arrogant toerag. I don't need you to tell me that. But Mulciber's and Avery's idea of humor is just evil. Evil, Sev. I don't understand how you can be friends with them." "Leave him ALONE!" "All right, Evans?" "Leave him alone. What's he done to you?" "Well, it's more the fact that he exists, if you know what I mean..." "You think you're funny, but you're just an arrogant, bullying toerag, Potter. Leave him alone." "I will if you go out with me, Evans. Go on... Go out with me, and I'll never lay a wand on old Snivelly again." "I wouldn't go out with you if it was a choice between you and the giant squid." "Petrificus Totalus!" "LEAVE HIM ALONE!" "Ah, Evans, don't make me hex you." "Take the curse off him, then!" "There you go. You're lucky Evans was here, Snivellus-" "I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!" "Fine. I won't bother in future. And I'd wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus." "Apologize to Evans!" "I don't want you to make him apologize. You're as bad as he is..." "What? I'd NEVER call you a- you-know-what!" "Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you've just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can- I'm surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me SICK." "I'm sorry." "I'm not interested." "I'm sorry!" "Save your breath." "I only came out because Mary told me you were threatening to sleep here." "I was. I would have done. I never meant to call you Mudblood, it just-" "Slipped out? It's too late. I've made excuses for you for years. None of my friends can understand why I even talk to you. You and your precious little Death Eater friends- you see, you don't even deny it! You don't even deny that's what you're all aiming to be! You can't wait to join You-Know-Who, can you? I can't pretend anymore. You've chosen your way, I've chosen mine." "No- listen, I didn't mean-" "-to call me Mudblood? But you call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?" She'd tugged her robe back around her, still frustrated and exhausted and so, so tired. Severus had been the first friend she'd really had, outside of Petunia. The first person she'd put all her trust in. And in the end, she was nothing more than just another Mudblood to him. But Lily wouldn't cry. No, she was made of stronger stuff than to let someone like Severus Snape make her cry. Let him call her what he wished. Let him throw his life behind people and causes that would destroy people like her. She would prove them all wrong, and she'd never accept an apology on the other side of things. He wasn't worth the effort. Climbing the stairs to the girls' dormitory, Lily pushed the door open, the simultaneous silencing charm to keep the ancient hinges from squeaking all but second-nature by now. Mary was waiting up, and said nothing, just held her arms open for an embrace. Lily took the invitation, but her stalwart promise to herself held true. She would not cry over Severus Snape. ~~~ There was a knock on the door. Laz's eyes flew open, and he stared up as the ceiling came into focus. Not the four-poster bed and Gryffindor red curtains he'd expected, but not his familiar (if perhaps austere) bed at home in London, either. It was going to take him a moment to re-calibrate, to remember where- and who- he was. "Breakfast!" |
