It was Saturday night and, thankfully, also a night when Charlie was able to have Juno over for the night. It wasn’t like she wouldn’t have her over regardless, but it was easier when her parents were amenable to the company. Charlie loved these nights because, for however long she could convince Juno to stay, she wasn’t alone in a house too big for the three people who lived there. As her father constantly liked to remind her, she had been an accidental child and, as such, had been born many years later than the sibling closest to her age. She loved her brother and sister both, but they’d never been close enough to really be her friends. So, for all intents and purposes, living in this massive house was like living here as an only child whose parents were always on the opposite side of the place as her. When Juno was here, her room felt a little more like home. Not that she was about to tell her best friend that. She knew how weird that sounded. Tonight, they weren’t doing much of anything. Both were a bit on the overachiever side of academics and were already caught up on the weekend’s homework. While Juno was sat up on Charlie’s bed flipping through a book, Charlie was standing in front of her vanity mirror testing the various products she’d picked up from her latest trip to the makeup store. “So,” she said, dipping a brush into the blush she’d bought. “Any idea who you might go to homecoming with next weekend?” Juno looked up from the book at the question and bit her lip--she was embarrassed how the question stole her attention so easily and the little pang it caused in her chest. Truthfully...Juno had been hoping that Rory would finally just ask her. They’d had a rather epic fight about it years ago now when Juno had gone with an older Aurelius boy who she’d dated for a time, too...Viktor, who’d been smart and athletic and considerate, but even then...Juno would have infinitely preferred it if Rory had just bloody well asked her. Since when did she think things like bloody well? She sighed, “No,” Juno admitted. She knew she was free to ask Rory; Juno had never been one to romanticize archaic, patriarchal norms...but the thing was, while she felt certain how how she felt about Rory, she didn’t feel at all certain about how he felt about her, beyond their friendship. Juno would have liked the clarity that Rory making the first move would have offered. Juno hesitated--she’d never admitted having anything remotely in the realm of feelings for Rory to anyone. She’d barely even admitted it to herself, but as she looked over at Charlie, Juno thought it might be nice to share some of the burden, especially with someone other than [Harry] who was too deeply invested and caught in the middle of it all for it to be anything but awkward. “I was...ah...kind of hoping Rory might ask,” she admitted, rushing the end of the sentence so the words smushed together and came out sounding more like ahkindhopingrorymightask Charlie’s eyes widened, as did her grin. Putting the brush down, she turned on her stool to face Juno. “Alright, say that again, slightly slower,” she said, leaning forward with her hands on her knees excitedly. She didn’t think they needed dates to any of the school dances. They could always go together and have likely even more fun than they would otherwise. But now that Charlie was aware that Juno at least somewhat wanted to go to the dance with someone, she was already 100% on board with trying to make it happen for her. Juno sighed--by mumbling and slurring her words, she’d probably only succeeded in making this into an even bigger reveal. “I said that I was hoping that Rory might ask,” Juno said more articulately this time. “Which...sounds kind of dumb when I say it outloud, because I know I could just ask him, but…” she shrugged. “I guess I just kind of...want to get a better sense of how he might feel.” Juno bit her lip again, then continued “Just after sophomore year and all, you know...he was so stupid about it all, asking as a last resort and getting all jealous over Viktor...” Juno shook her head and rolled her eyes, “I guess maybe I feel like he owes it to me to do it right, now that it’s our last chance.” |
