WHO: Quincy & Violet
WHEN: hmm let's say today
WHERE: Their cabin
SUMMARY: Q & V get a little more in touch with their inhuman sides
WARNINGS: Umm, there will be a mild earthquake in the Dunhaven area today. ;)
The greenhouse was bursting with life: anemone, larkspur, and snapdragon already reached out of the ground, hungry for warmth and for light. Violet, clad in her Carhart bib overalls and clutching a watering can, pruned and looked after the delicate young seedlings with careful precision. Dusting her hands on her trousers, she stepped outside and as the cold air stung her face she smiled, glad for those simple moments that made one feel alive. She sent a quick thought to Quincy, hoping the same for him at his worksite. As she reached out to loose her phone from her pocket and message him those hopes, she expected another wave of memories from Daisy Johnson (the queasy dip in her stomach a tell-tale sign.) Instead, the earth around her spun and she felt a rumble in her feet that went straight through her hands and shot out to destroy the stack of neatly organized firewood before her. Falling to her knees, she clenched her hands and sat on them, mind racing as she just focused on stopping the shaking, saving the implications for later. Because, of course, this could be nothing but a spotty and mild earthquake. But she couldn’t get Daisy - or Daisy’s ability to manipulate movement and frequency - out of her mind. Quincy had just pulled into the driveway when he felt the earth start to shake, so he turned the car off quickly and waited -- for it to stop, to be sure that it was safe. The lucky thing was that they didn’t live in the middle of a city, surrounded by buildings. The downside was that Quincy really had no idea what to do with an earthquake. When it didn’t stop as soon as he imagined, he got out of the car and headed first towards their house to find Violet. When she wasn’t there, he turned to the greenhouse next, worrying that all of the tremors would break the glass and she’d be stuck in there covered by broken glass. “Violet?” She seemed to sense Quincy before he ever arrived, as if the molecules around her heralded someone else living approaching her little plot of dirt. She looked up, pale and feral-eyed, fearful of what might come next. “Um, hey. Stay back, Q.” The fear in her voice wasn’t enough to dissuade him. Almost immediately, Quincy knew what it was they were dealing with: Daisy. He didn’t know how or why, but he did know the cause of the tremor and of her fear. His voice was gentle and firm when he spoke, “I’m not leaving you.” He approached her slowly, hands raised and open. He trusted her. She wouldn’t hurt him, not in a million years. “We’re gonna get through this together. Okay?” “Just, like … I’m trying, I’m trying.” She took several deep breaths and waited to speak when she felt as though she had a handle on what was happening to her hands. “And wouldn’t it be nice if I could do this without needing gauntlets, training or anything special SHIELD gave Daisy.” Looking up at him, she smiled bleakly. “But I have a Q. Score one for V.” It would have been nice if all of the ridiculous memory bullshit they’d been through came with instruction manuals beyond what was in their own heads. Quincy tried to recall what Lincoln had told her when she’d first come to Afterlife, but there were still blank spots in his memory. “You remember what she knew, though, right?” he asked, hopeful. “About how to control it?” He knew it’d taken a long time before Daisy felt comfortable, but eventually she’d figured it out. He had faith in Violet, too. “She manipulated vibrations. That’s all this is. She can make them vibrate more, or less. You can do that too.” “Okay, babe. Yeah.” She nodded slowly, pulling her hands out to cross in her lap. Unsure, she couldn’t see her way clear to Daisy’s method. But she could concentrate on the breeze, she could concentrate on Quincy’s shadow falling over her face. She could feel the way the earth was supposed to feel. And so she focused on that, brows knit with concentration. It was subtle, but Quincy could swear he felt a change. He summoned the courage to get closer and drop onto his knees beside her, though he kept his hands to himself for a moment. His hands were tingling with their own electricity, something that had popped up earlier on the site. It was the reason he’d come home, and now, anxious about not knowing how to help, it flared up again. “You’re doing great, Violet,” he reassured her. “I’m so damn proud.” That subtle shift in the architecture of vibrations around her -- the crackle of electric -- stirred deep in Daisy and it was as if she were pointing, exhorting Violet to look and see. Slowly, she leaned forward and offered her hands to him, palms up. An act of pure trust. Quincy had his hands clenched into tight fists in a vain attempt to keep his own abilities at bay, and it worked, to a point. He didn’t think that the point was to shut it all down and push it so far into the back of his mind that he lost it forever, though. He didn’t think Lincoln would’ve done that. The inhuman would’ve recommended opening himself up to it and embracing it. So he slowly reached out with one hand first and unfurled his fingers above her palm, letting her feel a bit of a spark. “We’re not alone.” Saying that didn’t help it stop right away, but it did bring a smile to his face, and it made him feel a little less afraid. She nodded, a grin spreading across her face as the spark warmed her hand. “ … we’re together. And we can do this.” Carefully, she pressed their palms together. “I didn’t know this was happening to you too.” “It’s new,” he admitted with a shrug. He hadn’t known he could do it, either. “I wouldn’t have come home right now if it hadn’t shocked me while I was doing electrical work. Figured I should take the day off, clear my head, figure this out.” He felt calmer already, just being near her. Her touch grounded him. Her presence grounded him. He leaned in to kiss her forehead. “Are you okay?” “Yeah -- I guess it makes sense they’d both manifest right about the same time. Can we, like, not tell anybody for right now? I want to work through this with just us.” She looked up at him through her lashes and tilted her chin to catch his lips. This was big. Bigger than a lot of the really big stuff they’d tackled together. Her gut said it wasn’t time to share something like this just yet. “That pit in my stomach that made me feel like I was going to jar all the bones in my hands loose is completely gone because you’re here. So yeah, I’m okay.” Quincy didn’t like the idea of keeping something from his brother, but he hoped Oliver would understand. He didn’t like that neither of them really knew what to do to make it stop, either, outside of each other’s presence. It left him feeling vulnerable - and in a terrifying way. What if they weren’t able to be near each other next time? What if it didn’t help? Depending on someone else so much in that way made Quincy anxious. So much could go wrong. All he could really do was nod his head, though. His voice felt caught in his throat, too afraid to voice his fears out loud. “How did we do that?” he asked, even though he knew she didn’t have the answers. “How is that real, too?” “We have to figure it out,” she said, her voice barely registering as a whisper. She knew he was thinking a step ahead of her. And she knew she would have to get there with him soon. Otherwise, it’s bad. “And we will.” “Yeah.” Quincy wished he felt confident that they would, but he didn’t. Not yet. They didn’t have a choice, however. It was either figure it out or let their newfound abilities go unchecked, and end up God only knew where because they were a threat. It was a matter of life or death. He let go of her hands so he could pull her into a hug instead. When they’d made their vows, he hadn’t expected something like this would be part of the for better or worse, but it was all part of being married, wasn’t it? Facing anything life through at them, side-by-side? “We will. I’ll be here every step of the way.” |
