Bird Life International did an extensive study on species labeled as Critically Endangered, and recommended three species be reclassified as extinct:
Cryptic treehunter, last seen in 2007:
Alagoas foliage-gleaner, which hasn't been seen since 2011:
Po'o-uli, which was from Hawaii and hasn't been seen in the wild since 2004 (the same year the last captive member of its species died):
So with birds, the usual cause of extinction is due to habitat loss, from logging or unsustainable agriculture, rather than big game hunting like we see with rhinos or elephants. People don't rotate crops so the soil ends up damaged, and then people tear down more forests to grow crops again. There's more chemical usage. And there's a ripple effect, when one part of the ecosystem is hurt, the rest of it suffers too. But I probably don't have to preach here, huh? It's just really sad.
