Cloud was grounded.
Or at least that was what Cloud felt like in the past few days since the SeeDs had gone and left for Winhill. That was a mission he'd been wanting to go to, not for an especially long time but more missions meant a higher chance of getting promoted which then meant more money. He wouldn't even be surprised if he'd been the first one to submit his name to the list but the officer in charge had seen his bandages and the bruises on his cheeks and that was all he needed to deny the request. Cloud tried to appeal the decision but a line was forming outside and there was no way he was going to get what he wanted.
Since then, he'd been in a sullen mood although that at least put him right at Kadowaki's health regime which consisted mostly of more rest, more healthy food and less time in the training center. Like a kid, he was constantly browsing the Garden network too, or Mognet or looking at the front gate in hopes of the gallant SeeDs' return. Rikku's previous network post where she challenged Edgar Figaro to get wet with ice had made him hold his breath because he thought they were back. But Edgar hadn't yet responded which was rare for the man from what he'd seen in the network.
Cloud just wished they'd be back already, so he wouldn't feel bad about being left out and losing that chance to earn. He was hoping for good news again that afternoon, when he decided to take a walk outside the Garden because the day had that perfect formula of being 60% blue skies, 40% white clouds and some light breeze to go with it. A spot on one of the stout walls in the hallway leading out of the Quad was chosen for his perch and once comfortable, he brought his phone out to browse for updates.
Just then, someone had come to introduce herself -- but not quite. A turn to the left was all he needed to see a dark-skinned cadette beaming at the camera on a tripod. Behind her was a brunet climbing up to the wall with a bucket in his hands. They were in their uniforms, all smiles, all giggles and ice could be heard swimming in the bucket. Oh. Cloud supposed this was a thing now.
Adjusting his position to something that was more comfortable, he decided to watch. Three names were spoken, and the drencher was given the go ahead with an excited, "This is it!" The cadette braced herself as the first splash of ice water fell to her shoulders.
And then the bucket slipped and smacked onto her head with a noisy clang, ice water and all. And as if that wasn't bad enough, apparently the cadet behind her had lost his balance and in a bid to control his fall, had pushed her forward while he fell back to the grasses behind him.
Cloud's mouth shaped the most perfect O when the cadette fell (clanged) to the tiles face first. He cussed under his breath and was soon running towards the fallen body who couldn't move in her cold puddle. "Hey!" he called out, his voice cracking loudly in the silence.
Slipping to his knee on the wet floor, he hurriedly removed the steel bucket from the cadette's head and cradled it on his arm. Her nose was practically leaking with blood. Cloud cursed again and turned towards the Quad.
"Hey, someone call the clinic!" he all but yelled to it.
