It was a year or two ago. Sabin tucked the younger students to bed, reassuring them that everything will be fine despite the heated argument taking place at the sitting room. He did not really believe what he said, but what else was he telling the children? And for his part, he could not do anything. This was a confrontation between father and son. Sabin had tried to respect this boundary since day one. He would not give Vargas any reason to suspect that he was 'usurping' his position, as Duncan's successor. Yet Sabin stayed within an ear's reach, under the pretense that he was sweeping the floor, because he could not abandon his master to this kind of violence and to be honest, plain delusion. Often his grip on the broom handle would tighten, but that was as far as his knuckles can go. One night though, Vargas did cross the line by shoving his father to the table, his master's favorite porcelain cups disassembling down the floor.
Sabin swooped in the room in a matter of seconds, berating Vargas to show some respect. Duncan would not have it though, rebuking Sabin to leave them in turn. There Vargas found the perfect opportunity to make a taunt at his 'honorary' brother. The intruder. The failed SeeD. According to Vargas, Sabin's training was futile. It was the very will of Hyne to destroy all impersonators to his power. The bombing of Trabia was his done in his bidding and no matter how Sabin prevented it, he could not stop the great Hyne from squashing those SeeDs and their SeeDlings like bugs.
That was when his fist flew so fast, he struck Vargas down in a move that even Sabin did not expect. Because for the first time, after weeks, months and years of managing to control his temper at Vargas, he drew the first blood.
And so in spite of his bleeding nose, Vargas was chortling in glee. "I was right, father. Your favorite mutt has fangs too. Just like me, eh? You will always breed killers. That is your failure."
