The Iliad as interpreted by Madeline Miller & Pat Barker (Briseis)
News flies faster than arrows through the camp: Patroclus rides into battle in Achilles' stead, rallying the troops and leading the attack on Troy.
The news is welcomed by the men in the camp. They foresee an end to their losses, perhaps to the war itself.
Briseis foresees an end, too. An end to the only protector she has had during her enslavement. An end to the only kind man she's met in this cursed camp.
Breathe life into him, she implores Apollo. Keep Patroclus alive and whole.
But she is not hopeful. The gods have long forgotten this place.
