Barnard Dulles was a brand new deputy, and he really hoped that this would not be his regular assignment. Usually these were handed out in person, but in these two special cases, the Council had thought it might be better if Barnard carried the new assignments to his fellow Gunslingers in person. He had a list, but why he wasn't sure because there were only two people on it. Brigham, Max: assigned to Josalynn Darklove, temporary partnership pending evaluation. Darklove, Josalynn: assigned to Maxwell Brigham, pending evaluation for return to full duty. Gulp. Barnard knocked on the door of Brigham's apartment, because it'd been the closest. Max was working out. His shirt was lying over the back of one of the chairs, and he was straddling the padded weight bench, doing curls with his left arm. The knock on the door interrupted him. "Just a minute," he called out, and hurried to the door. He reached behind the coat rack and picked up the short-barrel shotgun, and pointed it outwards as he opened the door. Barnard found himself staring down the long black pit of an open gun barrel. "Deputy Brigham?" Max nodded, dropping the shotgun back behind the coat rack as he recognized the Gunslinger badge. "Yeah, I'm Brigham." "The Council has a new assignment for you, Deputy. Here, I'm supposed to deliver this to you and give you the paperwork." He held the envelope containing the papers out to Max. As soon as Brigham took them, he fled. Max watched the fleeing deputy with some amusement, and opened the envelope. He shook the papers out, scanning over them. He'd been expecting this; the Council had been getting one too many reports about how he was a loner, didn't like playing with the other kiddies in the playpen, and he knew they'd been considering assigning him a partner in lieu of a psychiatric observance and the orders he'd gotten said as much. But it was the identity of his partner that both made him want to laugh and infuriated him. "Josalynn fucking Darklove." He grinned, and reached for the telephone. Josalynn's number was printed on the form, just as his was, and he hoped to Christ almighty that he got in touch with her before the delivery boy did. Oh, this was going to be so much fun, he almost couldn't stand it. His fingers skipped over the numbers on the telephone dial, and he went back to his weight bench, curling with his left arm while his right held the phone between his ear and his shoulder. |
