CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY - LIAM MONTROSE
Name: Liam Payton Montrose
Nickname(s):Rosie, and nobody smirks when they say it.
Age:374
Race: Vampire
Profession: Doctor specialty in high risk OBGYN for all species
Current Residence: Sanguis
Family Members: None Known Alive
Affiliation: Drake Coven but tries to stay out of politics as much as possible. He sees the writing on the wall with the growing tension and would rather keep his head down.
Physical Description: 6’5” 225lbs big blue eyes often described as “puppy dog” eyes. Dark short spiky hair with widow‘s peak, cleft in his chin, clean shaven. Wears a suit, tie, and lab coat to work or scrubs as necessary. Off the clock he likes a t-shirt and jeans or sweat pants. If he’s out for the evening he usually wears a nice pair of pants, shoes, and a long sleeved shirt with the top button left undone, or formal wear as necessary. Liam wears a silver ring on his right ring finger, it was a family heirloom from his adoptive mother. He will sometime slip it onto his left ring finger if he wants to avoid being flirted with by women.
Distinguishing Marks: small mole on his upper lip
Personality: Quiet but friendly, Liam is a rule bound nice guy. In social situations he can be shy especially if he is with a woman he is attracted to. He has a high respect and admiration for woman. With his patients he exudes an air of calm and trust. When he needs to be he can be menacing and even cold. He’s not a violent man and doesn't like conflict. For the most part however he tends to be reserved with personal information but open with emotions. He wears his heart on his sleeve and his eyes are easy to read. When they're not it’s a good time to worry. He feels he is somehow stuck on the outside of life and can often be broody if left alone.
Liam enjoys the finer things society has to offer; drinking, gambling, art, theater. He travels in a variety of social circles though doesn't feel close to many people. Romantic relationships usually end up with him getting his heart broken. Most women flock to him expecting a tough guy and soon realize they've wound up with a teddy bear. He is a knight in the archaic psychological sense. He'll take on an army single handed without any regard or concern for his own safety but when confronted by his lady he'll remain loyal whether she chooses to treat him as her lover or her dog though he would never accept the same treatment from anyone else. He can be extremely emotionally needy in relationships. He would probably be happiest with a vampire due to their already matriarchal society but he has a shaky relationship with vampire society which he isn‘t entirely sure how to, or if he wants to, rectify. This hurts him but he bears the stigma in silence.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Magical Abilities: The enhanced strength and abilities that comes from being a vampire. Even considering he’s a vampire he still has an excellent sense of smell when it comes to blood. He smells blood in the air like a shark smells it in the water. Can detect and identify people by their pheromones.
Weaknesses: All typical vampire weakness apply. Also has a psychological weakness for women, he wants to protect them regardless of species. A knight in shining armor complex. Has been known to come to the aid of his patients/friends etc through illegal and even violent means but nothing has been able to stick legally to connect him to any crime. Yet. He’s otherwise very much a rule guy and doesn't like changes in the system. Very un-mechanical, if his motorcycle breaks down on the side of the road he’s calling AAA and he is not the guy to call if your garbage disposal breaks down.
Weaponry / Training: sword fighting, can use a gun, aim is decent, skilled cook, medical training
Other Skills: Speaks Sanguian, & Inora Standard. Cooking and baking
Personal History: Born 1652, premature and seeming sickly he was unwanted and cast aside from a dying clan of vampires as far as he knows. Facts are hard to come by and Liam has yet to take interest in his own history. He only knows what he has been told and that is very little. What he knows for certain is that at some point early in his life he was taken in and raised by a mortal woman who loved him like a son.
He has always been looked down upon by other vampires because of his compassion and loyalty for mortals. It doesn't help that his coven, which was never terribly impressive anyway, has died out. It’s an undercurrent of dislike however and very rarely brought up to his face that he‘s aware of. For the most part he likes to think that his loyalties are more complex than species. His shaky relationship with other vampires doesn't bother him though sometimes he wonders where he really stands with them.
He credits all his upbringing to his adoptive mother, and was a total momma’s boy growing up. He lived a quiet life with her, doing whatever work was necessary to help out. His mother sold and traded baked goods for income and he learned how to bake for her and developed a love of cooking. Liam cared for his mother in her old age and when she became ill. He cared for her until her death in 1725. Afterwards he sunk into a depression. For almost a century after the death of this mother he didn't do much of anything except survive, but eventually he was able get through his grief. He bought a brick town house in the city and focused on moving and closing up and selling his childhood home. After he settled into the new place he knew he had to find something to do with the rest of his life, and with the memory of what it meant to care for his dying mother he decided to become a doctor.
For a long time he was a general doctor and surgeon. He has never stopped continuing his medical education and formally switched to being a psychiatrist in 1890. He worked in an asylum that was supposed to be on the cutting edge of treating mental illness. He enjoyed helping his work but as more brutal therapeutic techniques began to gain in popularity he decided to change specialties again. When the asylum was eventually closed down Liam bought the property. He considered turning it into a museum or maybe a hotel and having the proceeds go to charity but it still stands empty today. He often gets people wanting to see it; students mostly. Some genuinely want to examine the place others just want a thrill (its rumored to be haunted) but he has yet to let anyone on the property other than the guards hired to keep people out.
He changed specialties again in 1945 and was county coroner in Sanguis for many years. Now he specializes in high risk obstetrics/gynecology. He is always attending lectures and reading medical journals. And he’s still a go to guy for underground doctoring of all kinds. He has a private practice, as well as hospital privileges. He also makes unofficial house calls for people in need or the elite. He is a good doctor and is subsequently popular with all species and classes of people. He has racked up more than one favor in his time. He works primarily at night unless there is an emergency and staffs two other doctors that are available in daylight hours. He’s traveled to all cities in Inora at one time or another for an emergency.
Recently one of his patients turned up dead. Authorities found one of his appointment cards in the victims purse and asked him if he could identify the body. It was obvious the woman’s new boyfriend was responsible for the murder but not enough evidence could be found to prove it. Liam confronted him and though he hadn't planned to, threw him off the roof of a twelve story building. No one as yet has come to call about the incident. He isn't losing sleep over it.
Other Character Notes: I left his history open for possible plot ideas if anyone wants him for anything.
Character Example: The night was chilled but not cold. Not quite crisp either. It was still too damp for that. The weather hung in limbo, craving spring but not ready to give up it's hold on winter just yet. Liam never liked this weather, this indecision. Indecision in his line of work could kill people, and it often did. He knew that first hand. They say you're never really a doctor until you've killed someone. They also say you never remember any other screw up more than your first fatality. He didn't believe that though. He remembered all of them. He remembered what they looked like. The jokes they had made or the worry they had expressed. He could still smell the blood seeping out of their bodies faster then he could put it back. And he remembered all the times he saw pain and fear in their eyes. Or relief.
His mother.
He remembered her most of all. The sound of her sigh when the doctor told her the fate in store for her. The look of disappointment in her eyes as treatment after treatment and trial after trial failed to cure her of the disease ravaging her body. He remembered the blow of reality that hit him when she lost her appetite, the moans of pain as he fed her chips of ice. And he remembered the softness of her hand on his and the look of desperation on her face as she pleaded with him. End it. Her eyes begged Free Me
So he did. He took away the last few hours of her life. Spared her the suffering. Put a knife in his own heart in the process. She was the only one who had ever loved him. And she was gone. He had killed her. Because he couldn't save her. When he set on a bench in an overly bright hospital hallway centuries later that was what he was thinking as the other staff came over and consoled him the night when he had lost his first patient. It happens. Mistakes. Tried your best. Real doctor now. Killed someone. Killed her.
He remembered them all but it was his mother who haunted him the most. And no amount of reasoning about mercy would allow him to let it go. Even if it was ok that he had killed her it would never be ok that he hadn't been able to save her. That was what he always thought of when he lost a patient. It was what he feared, had nightmares about. And it was what he was thinking now as he walked into his medical practice to being work tonight. Would he fail to save someone today?
