"Do you expect me to believe you came here out of concern for the boy?" The Bat's expression was hidden by the cowl, but his tone of voice spoke volumes. No, he did not believe that Iris was the one who'd become 'pawsy', because he highly doubted that Selina's motivations were selfless. The child was safe here, with his caretaker, and she had no business being anywhere near him. Nor did he, for that matter, but he'd only come to ensure that Gus was safe before making himself useful out on the streets. He seemed unconcerned by the dog's continued growling, perhaps because the animal wasn't advancing, not yet, and his gaze passed briefly over the boy and Iris who, in her shock, seemed to be rendered speechless. He had no idea how to deal with children, and while someone like Superman might have thought to smile, his mouth remained pressed in a firm line.
His ill temper meant that he was in no mood for her games, and his eyes narrowed when she wiggled her fingers at Gus a second time. "Don't go with her, Gus," he told the boy, since it seemed as though he might follow her for a brief moment before she left the room. Gus turned, eyes wide, and the Bat took a step forward, which didn't sit well with Finch, but the Bat had both height and bulk over the dog and when commands failed intimidation took over. "You know who I am, don't you?" The child nodded, still silent, and he listened for sounds of Selina's presence even as he spoke. "Luke sent me here to ensure your safety. I need you to stay with Iris, do you understand? No matter who comes, or what they say, you are not to leave her side. I'll come back when I can." Perhaps it was too serious a conversation to have with such a young child, but for his part Gus seemed to be listening, or at least trying to, and Finch's growling had lessened once it became clear that this shadowy figure meant his boy no harm.
The Bat waited until Gus managed a quiet 'uh-huh' of agreement before turning to Iris and giving her a curt nod, assuming recognition would set in at some point. He'd almost reached the doorway, bypassing Finch entirely, when the dog apparently had a change of heart and decided to attack. His patience had been expended by then, the Bat, and he caught the dog sharply across his snout with a gauntlet-clad forearm, sending him skidding to the ground with a whimper. Gus let out a gasp, but the Bat didn't look back, and he paused just long enough to inform Iris that there was a safe beneath the floorboards in the bathroom, one with a combination lock, where she could find weapons if she felt the need for such things before continuing on to the master bedroom, heavy footfalls marking his approach.
