Luke was on break when his phone beeped.
It wasn't the sound of an incoming call, or a text. No, it was something different; Bruce's phone was hi-tech, and he'd programmed it to alert him in certain instances. Basically it was a way to keep informed, to keep on top of things he was keeping an eye on, and in this case he was specifically waiting for a hit from California. His phone had been beeping a lot in the past couple weeks, but he'd scrolled past all the info sent his way because none of it was what he was looking for.
He wasn't expecting today to be different, but it was.
A link led him to a live feed from some news station in the area, and he sat in his car and watched, listened, as the reporter talked about the developing story unfolding out in some suburb. The victim, Robert Montgomery, had been shot multiple times and had been pronounced dead at the scene. And that? That had been exactly what he was waiting for. The reporter went on to describe recent allegations brought to light, citing motive, as the suspect taken into custody was said to have ties to one of the girls mentioned.
Click, and he closed the link. He'd seen what he needed to see. The sheriff wasn't a problem anymore, and that was what mattered. Dead, and he hadn't even needed to do anything, had he? His hands were clean. Someone else had pulled the trigger. And that wasn't his fault, it wasn't, because he hadn't done anything wrong. All he'd done was put the truth out there and, well, maybe if the police had moved a little faster, he wouldn't have died.
But, truthfully, Luke was glad they hadn't. He was glad the sheriff was dead. Maybe a tiny part of him was sorry that he hadn't been the one to do it, but it was better this way. He tucked his phone away and smiled to himself; Wren was safe. His family was safe. And a very, very bad man had gotten exactly what he'd deserved. Maybe some people wouldn't have called it justice but it was good enough for him.
