Re: Top Deck, away from the bridge
The smile returned like a stubborn feline that strayed and then missed the warmth of its indoor home. Maybe it did sound like an awful pick up line, but it was sweet, in a strange way. She warmed from that alone, unused to it. "Almost never," she replied, shaking her head.
"It was better than inside." That wasn't entirely the truth. The truth had more to do with running, with hiding, with finding a place that only certain people would be able to find her. He'd set her off-balance though. He seemed like he could matter, in a way she was looking to avoid. The countdown in her mind shifted, changed. Would he leave first, or would she run to hide?
She was still looking down at the water when she caught sight of his gloved hand in her peripheral vision. She jerked back at first, nearly losing her balance before her fingers gripped the railing and saved her from the talked-of fall. Her eyes were wide and wary when she looked up at him, ears flattening out to the side in her surprise, her hair tangling around the both of them. She froze then, watching him, another shiver threatening to journey up her spine, this time from touch and not chill.
