He bristled at her sharp tone, and this time there was no apology, no attempt to coax out more affection or tear down whatever walls she had begun to rebuild. When she stood he took a step back, paused, and then moved back forward, conflicted, half defiant and half confused as to what had triggered the sudden shift between them. His ears twitched erratically and his tail hung low, clear signs of his agitation. Stay, leave, stay, leave; he couldn't decide.
In the end, his stubbornness won out.
"I will," he growled, and there was a glimmer of hurt within yellow eyes before it was gone, replaced by a furious sort of burning. The wolf backed up again, and for a long, long moment he looked at the woman, almost regretful. Then he turned and bounded away, out of the booth and even the basement itself.
