The wolf shifted his weight on his paws and his ears went back, half frustrated by his inability to understand and half by her apparent lack of desire to free herself. His tail stopped swishing, but he made no attempt to pull free of her grasp. "Once," he said, "I led a pack. But no more. I have no pack. I need no pack. My place is what I wish it to be." But perhaps it was not the same for him as it was for her, and it wasn't fair to expect her to be like him. He lowered his head, sheepish, and laid his muzzle on her knee with a quiet, apologetic whine.
