It was easier to take Helena across after her conversation with Damian than to remain there, her thoughts cycling around no decent place. Time on this side would do her good, give her the space she craved without separating her so much from her family. Or so Morgan thought.
A few steps from the door, the phone in her pocket chirped with a message. Fishing it out, she looked first at the phone numbers to see who had called her. It wasn't familiar to her, but she recognized the area code enough to know that it was from Canada. Her mother perhaps?
Smiling, she flipped through the screens to get to her voice mail, phone pressed to her ear. The smile fell after the first words were spoken. Hospital. Her mother. Stroke. ICU. Past that, she heard nothing as she clicked the phone off and hurried to her car. The distance, it seemed, was going to be hers to make instead.
She didn't return home but drove straight to the airport, ignoring all thoughts of at least taking along an overnight bag. The phone calls could wait until she secured a plane ticket back home -- or after she had seen her mother. Who did she need to call? Olivia. The house to cancel her appointments. Was there anyone else? Luke perhaps, but that wouldn't require a phone call, only a post on the journals to let him know that Helena would be gone though Morgan knew not for how long.
A half hour later, armed with her phone and journal, Morgan had a ticket away from Vegas. Neither phone call nor post was made then and two hours later, when the plane had reached cruising altitude, it was too late. She felt the girl she'd come to know slip away from her, voice fading into nothing but the hum of the engines.
