And I thank you for bringing me here, For showing me
Since the conversation with Felicia, it was all Thor could think about. If he had been the one in control he would have left then, but Benji had his first day at his job today and he knew the other man needed it. That didn't make the wait any easier on him, but he did his best to keep his impatience from influencing Benji. As soon as they were able, he knew that Benji would get them to the hotel and he'd have his first attempt at going home -- really home.
The texts that he'd shared with Lizzy had almost changed Thor's mind. If this man was willing to hit her, she deserved the protection he could afford her. However, there was an entire planet of men and women that might need him and hat had driven his choice. If he could make it to Asgard, he would and do the best to ensure the safety of his people before returning home.
Ben, knowing how important it was to Thor to at least try, sat outside the Passages hotel, texting with Lizzy. As soon as the frequency died down, he tucked his cell into his pocket and went inside. Relinquishing complete control to Thor was always an odd thing, but as soon as the other man felt the key in his hand, his thumb rubbing over the branches of the tree, the waiting was over. Thinking of nothing but home, he went to his door and inserted it.
And stepped through into his quarters on Asgard.
If he had been in attendance, the rooms in use, the braziers and fireplaces would have been lit. The long table would have been piled with food, his friends and brother seated around it or on one of the many couches in the room.
There were none of these things currently. His time on Midgard had not changed some things though and instead of creeping around his room like a thief, he strode to the door, Placing his ear on it, he listened for anyone in the hallway before emerging.
He'd made it almost as far as Loki's quarters -- or what used to serve as Loki's rooms -- before he ran into any guards. He ran his thumb along the leather bindings in the handle of Mjolnir, but the look between the guards, their fists to chest and their bow, Thor relaxed his grip. "Get word to your most loyal commander and bring him here. I would have words with him," Thor said.
"Yes, Your Majesty," came the quiet response followed by the sound of footsteps disappearing. He had no idea if Loki was on Asgard at the moment, and checked inside his rooms. They were mercifully empty.
On a stand not far from his brother's bed was the same washbowl that Thor had his own rooms for morning ablutions. Above it, a mirror. Subtlety was not his forte, nor his strength, but he had left messages for his brother like this before. Breathing across the surface, he waited until it steamed to write three letters on it: COW.
Directly underneath it, he wrote three more symbols. Wunjo for family and kin, tiwaz for a wrong made right, but it was the third rune that he considered for the longest. Huffing out another breath of air, he finally added thurisaz for both conflict, and the wisdom and consciousness combined with sheer physicality as the third and final rune.
Others might not understand the message, but Thor had no doubt that Loki would understand it. The message left, he returned to the hallway to confirm with the commander of the guard that his brother was not currently in the Citadel.
He wasn't.
"When he returns, let him come no further than this room. Once he enters, he's not to leave. I will return daily, but I cannot stay now. Too many of us are missing and I must find them. But I will return."
"I understand, Your Majesty," the commander said.
"And the people? Are they safe? Unharmed?" Thor asked.
"They worry for you and your family, Sire, but otherwise they are unharmed." There had been relatively few losses when Loki usurped the throne. Nodding, Thor clasped the man's shoulder. Even the few though, had been too many.
"I shall return when I can. If you can, give me the names of those that have lost someone. I would speak to them." He didn't know how long it would be, but now that he could return home, he'd return whenever he could -- and whenever Benji's schedule allowed him to. "Spread word quietly. I am alive, but I will be no thief and will not steal a throne whose keeper is not present to defend it."
"Yes, Sire. I shall let my men know."
"Thank you." Thor gave his shoulder one last squeeze. "Until next we meet."
Farewells exchanged, Thor returned to his room and passed through the door that would return Benji to his home.
