Re: The woods
Had she known how not looking at him was affecting him, Wren would have turned around and taken his hand and left right then. But she didn't know, and she didn't even consider it. Instead, she watched the older version of him circle the desk, and she listened to the tapping of the cane. "I've been away," she finally said, and it sounded like truth, because it was truth. This was Seattle, after all, and she hadn't been here for years. "I left years ago, and I haven't been back. And I know he was difficult."
She bit her lip when he asked how she'd known Thomas and, despite her safe plan, she deviated. "I knew him at night," she said simply, quietly, knowing that could be construed a thousand ways, and willing to let him fill in the blank however he wanted. And, she knew too, that the chances that he would think she was there to blackmail him were high. But she was willing to take the risk. After all, if he threw her out, then maybe they'd go back to where they should be, where she existed. It wasn't a stretch to assume Thomas had still been involved in the Seattle vigilante scene, right? After all, that hadn't had anything to do with her. "I was scared of him," she admitted, hoping that honesty would get her honesty in return.
"You aren't happy," she added, perhaps out of the blue. But really, that's what she wanted to know. She wanted to know how things differed, and she just didn't know how to ask without it sounding crazy. "I mean, I remember hearing about you when he first adopted you. I remember seeing articles in the papers, and you seemed happy then," she tried, the uptick of her voice at the end indicating a question, one that she was hoping he would answer. She still wasn't sure if this was better than what she'd done to him or not, than what he'd gone through because of her, and part of her needed to know that so badly it stung. And that sting was just increasing the longer they stood there. Maybe he was just unhappy because of the women he chose, maybe this place was better for him over all.
