Re: clearing, in a sleigh.
Adam was still, a calm coldness bringing an end to all the anger the last vision had shaken out of him. So, he could be happy. This was proof he could have it. The tall doctor walking down the street with the exotic redhead on his arm had the same worry lines across his forehead, the silver tips of some hair around his temple from Seattle, but god damn it he was happy. “He’s still dead, but I’m not a mess.” Adam looked to MK who was consumed by that jealousy he had gotten so used to seeing. “Don’t do that.” He snapped sternly, even if he had just asked her to choose between him and the first real love of her life. Adam was an expert at hypocrisy when it suited him.
He turned to follow the happy couple just close enough to hear them talk. It wasn’t anything like Adam and MK’s desperate, cloying love. No, this was sane, sensible, mature and balanced. It was neat and without the messes that Adam accused MK of dragging into his life. He could feel his chest tighten. Yes, that’s what he wanted. He wanted to be a doctor. He wanted to love someone without it hurting him in ways he couldn’t describe. He wanted to find a woman who believed in him so that he could marry her. But, he wanted that with MK.
Adam stopped in the crowd, letting the happy couple bounce away from him as he glanced up to MK and her horrified expression. He didn’t say anything for a long time as he slowly shuffled back over to her. “Yes.” Adam whispered after a moment, head tilted down to look at his feet. He was ashamed to admit it. After fighting for MK so hard, he couldn’t believe that it really was all for nothing. “Can’t give up everything for you. Can’t give up everything for me. Want something like that instead.”
