"What was it?"
Hellblazer didn't have the chance to respond. His vision started to close like a curtain and he crumbled towards the water below. No magnificent dive. No smirk and nod. Just a quick, clumsy tumble. He flinched, holding his arms close to his body as he torpedoed through the endless murky water. Barely opening his eyes, he saw the cigarettes fall from his pocket. The lighter, too. Then his tie loosened and snaked around him like a Chinese dragon. Everything that meant something to the Hellblazer was gone. Well. Except one thing. But, that was his too.
There was no memory of the tank. Sometimes his mother pressed her nose to the glass like an eager child examining a shark, but that was more of a feeling than a memory. He didn't like thinking about it, but being lost in water reminded him that he wasn't a normal child. That was the thing, though. He hadn't been a child for a long time. Now, lost in endless dark water without a possession in the world, he decided to accept it. If he was going to die lost, at least he'd die a man. Stretching his arms out a little, he opened his eyes wide and kicked.
Damian woke up on his floor. He gasped, coughing at the imaginary water in his lungs. A dream? It couldn't have been. Dreams were transitory, clouded. Then again, there was no going to that party. He just appeared at the Phantom's door, daring it to poke out it's ugly head. It made him smile. "Pennyworth?" Damian asked. "Bruce?" Nothing. He shrugged, getting to his feet slowly and taking off the Hellblazer coat. It laid there for a while, in the almost dark of the Wayne Manor before Damian suddenly scrambled for the pocket. Delicately reaching for the black feather the fallen had left him, he carefully pulled it out like removing a splinter.
He wasn't normally very sentimental. Damian imagined Grayson's reaction to his protective attachment to the thing. It made him consider crushing it right there in his hand. But, it was more than just a reminder. More than just proof that he was a wise cracking Hellblazer for the night. So, he carefully placed it in a drawer of his room and headed down to the Batcave.
