Everyone dealt with stressful situations in different ways. Some people drank their problems away, some people lost themselves in work. For Callum, he simply went home when everything was over, called his dog over, and sat for the longest time simply petting Max while sitting beside the door of his run-down motel room. The memories of the party were still fresh in his head; the lazy thoughts, the pain, the fear that caused him to retaliate. It was fresh and bitter, overwhelming his senses to the point that there was no room for anything else up there. Max let out a whine, nudging his hand, that familiar noise drawing him back to the here and now as he gave a scritch behind his dog's ears.
"Sorry for spacin' out on you there. I've had one hell of a night, boy," Callum murmured to the pup, leaning down to bury his face against the dog's neck before hauling himself up to his feet. The water and food dishes were refilled, and he pulled a cold can of beer out of the mini-fridge. Cracking it open, he settled on the foot of his bed, draining half the can before something came to him.
That guy in his head, pensive and quiet as he was, was quieter than normal. And then he realised that he hadn't heard the assassin since the party. Not a peep, not even a fucking word of goodbye. But it wasn't that he was alone up there, oh hell no. He couldn't be that lucky. But whoever it was up there was keeping herself quiet as a mouse, leaving Callum surprised he could even identify her as female.
"Well fuck me. Shai leaves town on whatever it is she's doing. Arrow-boy skips out. And I get a girl to replace 'em both. Not even one I can look at. Raw end of the deal, Max. Raw deal." A treat was dug out of the bag beside him and he held it out for the dog, watching as he trotted over to eat it from his palm, fingers giving a rub behind the ears before he flopped back on the bed. "This place fucking sucks."
