The observation prompted a soft sigh from her, and a quick look down at her bare feet. "Sorry. I've just... been looking for someone all night. I thought maybe you- maybe he'd found me." She shook her head, mostly at herself, and took a deep breath before looking back up and smiling. "It's alright. I didn't really expect it to be him."
She didn't start to feel uneasy until he began to move again, headed toward her with a heavy lean on his cane. After an extended bit of silence that she was certain he should have filled with more idle conversation, she shifted her weight nervously from foot to foot. "So," she started, voice suddenly too loud under the night sky, "Are you enjoying the party?" As he continued to stare, she moved one foot backwards with a quiet whisper of friction, her weight shifting away, the first unconscious step of a retreat.
