WHO Bianca (Narrative)
WHAT Disciplinary Meeting
WHEN Today
WHERE UNLV Campus
WARNINGS None!
Between all of the memories and what was going on with Andrew, Bianca hadn't been as on top of things as she usually was. Thankfully, it didn't impact her school work too much, given that she could go through her classes on autopilot for the most part. It had resulted in low A's and one very low B, which happened to be the result of a test amounting to 3/5 of her final grade. That same test was being called into question, according to the notification she received reminding her of a meeting that had been scheduled to discuss accusations of cheating. Bianca was stunned, to say the least. Not once, in her entire life, had she ever cheated at anything and she was concerned about why her academic integrity was being called into question. She showed up fifteen minutes before the meeting was scheduled, dressed in her customary business casual attire. The meeting was simply an exploratory one and the Hearing Board Adviser had already heard the accusation, attained the evidence needed, and spoke to her professor. All that was left was to talk to Bianca herself and then they would be able to settle the matter with a Dean as opposed to going through the Hearing Board. Bianca knew the process well because she had started on the University Hearing Board when she'd first started at UNLV. After increasing her course load and volunteer work, she'd been forced to drop that particular extra curricular activity. Bee had brought all of her notes, assignments, and tests from the class in question to the meeting, hoping that she could prove, along with a personal appeal, that she was innocent. "Bianca Simon?" Her name was called from inside an office and one glance to the secretary informed her that she could, in fact, go in. The office was rather small, just barely big enough for the desk, two chairs, and bookshelf that occupied the space. Seated in the chair behind the desk was an older woman who, while seeming quite friendly, made Bianca very nervous. Mrs Murphy, her name according to the nameplate, finished rifling through her papers and leveled a somewhat sympathetic gaze at Bianca. "Do you know why you're here?" She fidgeted. "Someone's accused me of cheating," Bianca replied as evenly as she could. Ariadne was there, a soothing presence in the back of her mind, and she was incredibly grateful for that. Maybe there was something to this psychiatrist, even if he was sketchy. "Yes, that's right. A student has stepped forward saying that they witnessed you cheating during an exam. Because the test in question counts for such an integral part of your grade, if you're found responsible, suspension and expulsion are potential sanctions that you might be faced with." She let that sink in for a moment, but Bianca's only reply was the widening of her eyes. "Now, I've heard from both your professor and the student in question and now I'd like to hear your side of the story," Mrs Murphy prompted. Bianca took a deep breath and found comfort in Ariadne's gentle Remember, you're innocent here, it'll be okay. "The test was...three weeks ago now," she started, and Mrs Murphy nodded to verify the date. "I was reasonably prepared for it, but not as much as I usually am. I wasn't expecting to get an A by any means, I knew I wasn't prepared enough, but the B- was a disappointment." She paused, worrying her lower lip. "I was sitting near the end of the row, which I usually do because I tend to finish my test before everyone else. I think...a girl named Maggie was sitting next to me? And a guy from one of the sports teams was on my other side," she continued, but Mrs Murphy shook her head. "I can't give you that information, Ms Simon." "Right, I know. I'm sorry. Anyway, I know I wasn't as prepared as I could have been, but I knew going into the test that I wasn't going to get an A. As you can see," and here she pulled out her assignments and tests, handing them over, "I've consistently gotten As on all of my assignments and the other test that was administered. I don't feel any pressure to be perfect by any means, but I do put a heavy emphasis on academics. Coming to law school was something important to me and I would never do anything to jeopardize that." Bianca took a deep breath. "I do remember being a little antsy during that exam, fidgeting in my seat and the like. I was really uncomfortable and I just want interested in taking the test at all. That might have been why someone thought I was cheating, but I can assure you, I didn't. The rest of my scholastic record speaks for itself, I think as well." God, this sucked. Mrs Murphy made notes in her file the entire time, nodding along, and when Bianca finished, she looked up and offered her a smile. "Your record is impeccable, Ms Simon, and your professor did come to your defense in this. We do, however, need to investigate every claim of violations in academic integrity. I have looked over this particular test and, after listening to your side of the story, I feel confident that you did not cheat. If you'll just sign this form, indicating the conclusion we've come to, we'll move on with this." Bianca blinked. "That's it?" she asked, before she could stop herself. Still, she reached forward for the page that needed her signature. Mrs Murphy just smiled. "That's all, Ms Simon. A Dean will review the file, but that's just a matter of course. If we need anything further from you, we'll certainly be in touch. I don't foresee that happening though." She took the form back and slid in all in a manila folder. "Have a good day, Ms Simon." "Thanks," she murmured in reply. "Have a good day." With that, she got up and left, wondering why the hell a girl who she didn't even know would say that she cheated. |
