You lean on a door frame of the place masks call safehouse and smell the wet city streets as you try to remember the words she said to you. Si quieres, No entiendo- simple words that sounded like honey compared to your jagged, quick English. How was it possible that someone so young, so filled with life would ever show interest in a doctor that didn't want friends? Who seemed only charmed by power and results? She sees something more in you and it should be frightening. But, it's not. It's lovely in a way you don't deserve.
You watch her flash of red hair vanish into the night and you turn to see your best friend sitting on a metal table. He's in full costume, his mask off as he's grinning like he knows something you haven't quite figured out yet. "What are you waiting for?" He asks you like you're stupid for keeping this distance from her. Despite the degree, the miracles you've performed. He looks at you like you couldn't be dumber.
"For this to be over." You say grimly, moving back inside to busy yourself with the cuts and bruises he's earned that night. "For her to grow up and realize I'm not nearly as mysterious as the masks I take care of."
He laughs at you and despite the heaviness in your stomach, you smirk up at him. "She's the mysterious one. I don't understand a thing she says." The masks says dismissively before launching into a speech about how his night went.
It's then you know that you will never tell her you don't understand.
