Who: Sadie and Sophie
When: A couple days ago when she got into town
Where: Sadie's apartment
What: Exchanging super villain cards!
Warnings: Cute. Lots of cute.
The flight had been late leaving Heathrow, and even later getting into Vegas, so the hour when Sophie Chase arrived back at the apartment she shared with Sadie was even later, but that didn’t stop her from throwing her own ‘Welcome Home’ party. The door was unlocked, luggage dropped just within, and after kicking off her Louboutins, Sophie slipped her way to her roommate’s room in the apartment, threw open the door, and all but pounced her on the bed. “Sadie, Sadie, Sadie!” Sophie chirped, lipsticked kisses dotted upon the girl’s face unbidden. “Did I surprise you? London got boring, and I missed you, so here I am!” She was a mass of smiles and caffeine-fueled energy, the bright look in her eyes speaking of how long she had been awake.
Sadie dreamed of question marks and math problems she could never solve. Since Riddler appeared in the back of her mind, the apartment had been quiet enough that she could get downright lost in it all. The sudden opening of doors and luggage being dropped startled her like a skittish kitten, eyes wide open as kisses rained down on her face. “Ahh, aah kiss monster noo!” Sadie struggled in her bed, tangling herself in the sheets as she tried to make sense of who and what was above her. Of course, her strength was so pitiful it was like a teddy bear trying to fight away a hug. Eventually, her wide eyes seemed to register the face looming over her and Sadie’s face suddenly changed into a silly grin. “You’re BACK!” She yelled loud enough to wake up the neighbors and wrapped her stringy little arms around Sophie. “Oh god you’re back. Everything was so crazy without you.”
It was this kind of greeting from Sadie that had Sophie beaming from ear to ear, winding her own arms around her and snuggling down in the covers with her. “Yes, I’m back. Early, I know, but I just couldn’t stay away any longer.” She grinned, lacing her fingers together as her face took on that serious Sophie thing she did, dark eyes wide, her attention completely on Sadie. “Tell Sophie what happened,” she demanded. “Or I’ll keep all the gifts I brought from London to myself. And trust me. You do not want that to happen.” There was a twinkle in her eye and a genuine fondness for the girl that was completely inexhaustible. Sophie knew a host of people, people her mother knew, people she knew, all high class and very foo foo about the world, but those kinds of people got boring. Too much pomp and circumstance to their lives, and Sophie had enough of that to last several lifetimes. No, Sadie was perfect in that manner. Equal parts adorable and sweet, and Sophie swore up and down that she could just eat the girl up if she was ever given the opportunity.
Sadie rolled over in her bed and pat the place next to her for Sophie to sit. She liked to cuddle, a habit she hoped would rub off on Edward, and Sophie got the most of it when they were at home watching movies or talking about boys. “Jonah has gotten himself into a mess of trouble.” Sadie said like they both saw this coming a mile away. The boy was trouble, but Sadie liked to think it was something malleable like silly putty or jello. “I can’t give you the details,” voice hush hushed, “But he got so beat up I had to take care of him. In my bed.”
Dark eyes widened at that bit of news, and she canted her head to the side as she settled in beside Sadie, stretching long legs out in front of her, lacing one hand with Sadie’s in a gesture that was automatic in its frequency. “And by take care of, you mean with plasters and salve, right?” she asked, though there was a tease in her eyes. “And you can’t just say ‘I can’t give you details’ without me wanting to know more, you know. Besides. I’ve got a secret and if you want to be that way, it’ll just stay mine.”
“Pffft you don’t understand how serious this secret is.” Sadie grabbed the muppet stuffed animal Jonah had held onto when she first brought him home and squeezed it to death. “My whole life is a bunch of little and big secrets rolled into one big thing I can’t tell you anything about.” She looked apologetically over at Sophie. “Which, I guess, makes you want to know more, huh?” There was a wistful sigh. Life was so much easier before Riddler showed up, but far less exciting. If there was a choice to be made, she’d keep the Riddler. “Tell me your secret first and then I’ll tell you one of mine. Promise.”
Sophie didn’t mind secrets, so long as she was included in them, and knowing that her roommate had one that was so special made her more than a little jealous. Crane was a whisper in her thoughts, and even though Sophie didn’t trust guys, Crane seemed... different. Or at least he assured her that he was. And it wasn’t as though he could demand a thing from her. She was in control, as she reassured him time and time again. Sophie shifted on the bed, folding her legs in front of her as Sadie grabbed the stuffed thing to hug, tucking her hands down between her legs, fingers folded together. “A secret for a secret?” she murmured, swaying this way and that before she tilted her head to the side and gave Sadie a long look. “I came back to town because someone asked me to,” Sophie said, her voice dropping down to conspiratorial tones. “Someone who isn’t real. He’s just up here.” And she tapped her temple with one manicured nail, lifting her brows as though to challenge her roommate to doubt her.
Sadie’s eyes changed, like something was moving past a window and in a second it was gone. “I know what you’re talking about.” She said solemnly, with a nod like they weren’t so crazy. “It’s this weird thing that’s been happening to people all over Vegas. Me, Jonah and a whole mess of other people, too.” She almost reached for the question marked key at her nightstand, but Riddler made her stop. Ask questions first, then give answers. You know the rules, sweet Sadie. “Didn’t you find a key when the voice started?”
There weren’t a lot of people in this world that Sophie felt inclined to trust, but Sadie was one of the few, and even the man in the back of her thoughts wasn’t stopping her from continuing. Tread carefully, was his only warning. “It’s weird, isn’t it?” Sophie asked, all that energy from earlier melting away into a quiet intensity, her moods yoyoing from one extreme to the other. “And do you mean something like this?” She reached into her shirt to pull out the silver chain with the skeleton key that hung from it, dangling it up in front of them between lacquered nails. “And a journal. I haven’t opened it yet, even if he’s wanting me to.” She screwed up her nose for a moment, canting her head to the side as she watched the key sway back and forth between her fingers. “This is real, isn’t it?”
Sadie’s curiosity was getting the better of her. The skeleton key could mean so many things, but the likelihood of it being one of Edward’s enemies had to be slim, wasn’t? Keeping secrets from Sophie seemed unfair and maybe even a little dangerous. Jonah didn’t tell her he was the Joker until it was too late- imagine what would have happened if he kept it to himself until something killed the both of them. The Riddler didn’t like it, he wanted all his secrets to himself, but even joining minds with Sadie was making him more sociable. “It’s...very real. I’ve been on the other side. That key takes you to a door at a hotel and when you pass through you...let them take over. It’s kind of fun, but a little scary, too.”
Her chin ducked down a bit as she dropped the key into her lap, a little smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. “He already told me about it. He’s been through with someone else, before. Before me, I mean.” Sophie looked up towards Sadie, head tilting to the side. “If you tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine. Because besties shouldn’t keep things like this a secret, right? I mean, even if we hate one another on the other side of things, that can’t get between you and me. Ever.” Sophie dropped the necklace back around her neck, feeling the key swing against her chest, and she shifted towards Sadie, winding long arms around the girl and pulling her in tight.
Sadie tilted her head to the side, looking up to Sophie with just a moment of trepidation before smiling sweetly up at her. They were besties, she decided, and even a man in a really great question mark suit couldn’t get between that. She wrapped her arm around Sophie and rested her head against her shoulder. “He’s The Riddler.” Sadie said finally, with a healthy serving of fondness in her voice. “Yeah, he might be a little crazy, but he’s fun. That’s all I could ask for, right?”
Long fingers stroked through Sadie’s hair as she rested her head against her shoulder, and when the truth of the matter finally came out, her fingers stalled in those dark strands, and inside her thoughts, trapped in the cage of her own body, Crane was on full alert. “The Riddler?” she echoed, and after a moment, she untangled herself from Sadie and shifted to look at her full on, both hands resting on the girl’s arms. “You’re not joking, right? Like...” It took help from Crane to fill in the blanks, because Sophie’s knowledge of the characters could fit on a pinhead, but Crane was more than happy to tell her everything he knew. “Green suit, loves puzzles, has been seen in a spectacular hat?” There was eagerness in her voice, a giddy energy that filled up the space between them.
Sadie lowered her voice, putting her hand over her mouth like they were telling each other secrets. “Yes, in fact I helped make his new suit. Even that amazing hat.” She crawled off the bed like a drunk kitten, rolling to her feet as she walked to the closet, opening it to reveal a green suit littered with dark purple question marks. She reached up on her tippy toes and with a buzz flipped a switch inside of Riddler’s green bowler hat to make the purple question mark light up the semi-dark room. “Isn’t neat? He told me how to make the hat, but I did everything else.”
All of her attention was on Sadie as she rolled from the bed, Sophie crawling to the edge and sitting there with her legs folded beneath her, a rapt audience to whatever it was Sadie was going to reveal. At the sight of the suit, and then the mini-light show, Sophie clapped her hands together and sprung forward, skidding to a stop in front of Sadie and the suit, reaching out to give it a touch. “This is fantastic. I so do not have words for how wonderful this is!” Hands reached towards the hat, and then she paused, fingers frozen in mid-air as she glanced towards Sadie with wide, dark eyes. “Can I? Touch it, I mean? Try it on, even?”
“Let me ask.” Sadie put her hands on her hips, eyes up towards her forehead as she and Edward had a conversation about the rights of his hat. Sophie was a pretty girl, Sadie reasoned and he should think of it as a blessing from such a charming girl. Riddler grumbled, stomped his feet and then eventually relented. “He says it’s okay ‘cause you’re pretty.” Sadie nodded with a smile and stepped back so Sophie could reach for it. “Doesn’t it make you smarter just having it on? It’s like a genius machine. Not that Riddler needs one of those or anything.”
Sophie grinned at the permission that was given, fingertips gripping the rim of the bowler as she lifted it and then placed it atop her own dark head. There was a laugh and she all but pranced over to the nearest mirror in Sadie’s room to have a look at her reflection. “Tell him thank you for letting me try it on,” Sophie said as she fluffed hair gone flat from the flight, pulling bits over her shoulders and modeling for the mirror. Finally, she turned around, giving her roommate a look that was equal parts excited and secretive. “You can also tell him that Crane says thank you for his help in Arkham.” There was no missing the glint in her eyes at that exchange, and grinning, she turned back to her reflection, though her attention was partially on Sadie’s figure still visible behind her in the mirror. Reaction, reaction. This was what Crane was eager for.
The reaction was more Riddler than Sadie at first. He was eager to see who was rummaging around in the girl’s head, but he knew the odds against it being someone from Gotham were extremely high. The look of shock was almost masculine, eyebrows raised, mouth open just a little bit before snapping shut. Crane was a good ally to have and if they were connected to best friends forever, then the likelihood of double-crossing would be lower. “I can’t believe it.” She said softly without the fluffy inflections. But, when she looked back up at Sophie, Riddler had returned back to his corner. She suddenly gave a high pitched scream like they had just won a car on The Price is Right. “This is perfect! Sophie! Do you understand how perfect this is.” She rushed to her friend, hands holding onto her arms as she lightly shook Sophie.
The reaction was just what Crane needed, and he could see how much of his rescuer in Arkham existed there in Sadie’s eyes for that brief moment. This would be good, he knew, better than what had happened with Alex, because he had no intentions on letting this girl be killed like that. Letting Sophie at the wheel again, he retreated as the girls shrieked at one another. Sophie whirled around in time to catch Sadie approaching, and her grin nearly split her face in two. “I have an inkling of an idea,” she responded, giving a little hop up and down before she plucked the hat from atop her head and put it back upon Sadie’s, tweaking the brim just so to give it the perfect slant. “You and me, and those two men... it’s going to be marvelous, isn’t it?”
“We’re going to get in sooooooo much trouble.” Sadie said it like trouble was just another word for a giant ball pit and unlimited games at Chuck E. Cheese. She looked downright mischievous in the hat and the way her eyes glinted with two different kinds of crazy. There was no shortage of sweetness in the little riddle girl, but she loved thinking of both Gotham and Vegas a playground. “I’m too excited to go back to sleep. Let’s hit the town. I wanted to throw you a party anyway and buying you drinks should totally be good enough.”
