[Ash and Dair]

[Dair was door side more often than not these days, but the strange part was, as much as he did go there, it felt like it was fading. Like he was being stretched and his thoughts weren't running into Bruce's anymore. Not the way the scientist did when he shut doors on Dair to keep him out of his business, but the start of silence. It was funny because a long time ago he thought silence in his head was normal. Still he let that go because Bruce was saving lives. And there was escapism in that. In being someone else so he didn't have to deal with the madness that was becoming his real life.

That led to him missing a few things and then when he actually checked his phone, dreading it, he saw the details about Ash. He planned on going straight to Neil to see how he was feeling, but he went to Ash first. Dair talked to the doctors when he got there and then parked himself in a chair next to her bed. She was sleeping; from the amount of injuries she sustained, she'd be doing a lot of that. He wasn't sure how long he was there, enough that his back had a twinge in it, but he ignored his phone and stared at her vitals. ]

Fuck. How did we get here? [He mumbles to himself, changing his position in the chair, rubbing a hand across his unshaven jaw. He is going to make sure he's there, whenever she wakes up.]

[Everything after the ambulance ride from the hotel to the hospital had been a blur. There were bits and pieces of things she could remember, the sound of doctors, nurses coming in to check on her, and in between all of that there was blessed darkness and the warm, comforting arms of sleep. She was unsure how much time had passed when she finally started to stir, the sound of Dair's voice breaking through the quiet of the hospital room.

There was pain, considerable amounts of it, everything from her face to her head and then down to her wrists. Blinking hurt, so did moving her head in the slightest. But she could see him sitting there by her bed, so with considerable effort, she reached out to touch his arm.]

	No, it won't feel that way, but you will be. And I'm sure they've got you on good drugs. [Dair is very gentle with her hand. Seeing her this way is incredibly painful, like he can almost feel the bruises on his own skin. He only wishes he could take them from her.] He'll be all right too, yeah. 	That's not true. There's plenty of people who don't get it right the first time, or even the second time. Or lose their spouse and go on to the next. [Dair was not a fan of monogamy or serious relationships himself, but he appreciated other people wanting them.] It seems impossible now, but that'll change. You shouldn't give up. It would be rather selfish of me to think that there were many out there for me, wouldn't it? [She's quiet again, squeezing his hand again.] I liked him a lot, Dair. 	I'm not sure the world works that way, Ash. One person for everyone. It's not selfish to want good things for yourself. [He doesn't squeeze her hand in case it hurts, but runs his thumb on her knuckles.] You did like him, but maybe you made yourself love him. Or think you did, because of the situation.
