“Shhh, shh.” Luke gently hushed Chiara as he removed her from her crib and pulled the awake and cooing baby to his chest. They didn’t need to set off the baby monitor any more than it had already and wake momma up when he was trying to let Allegra sleep in a little today.
A gentle bouncing from side to side was begun with a soft singing to sooth Chiara briefly as Luke shifted, completing a diaper check - clean for the moment, too good to last for sure - before kissing the kiddo’s forehead and beginning to dress her for the day.
Thankfully, having practiced this many times over Luke had mastered the wiggly nature of his little cub and figured out the moves he needed to make to assure little limbs got properly put through little clothing holes without incident. A cute little panther outfit with the hood pulled back and tail safely tucked out of the way once Chiara was in her rocker in the kitchen.
“Alexa” Luke spoke aloud. “Play baby shark.” As the song started to spring to life in the kitchen speaker Chiara giggled and began to bounce. Grinning he’d shift to start retrieving everything he’d need to make pancakes.
Milk, check. Eggs, check. Batter mix, check. Strawberries and blueberries and bananas, check. Moving around the kitchen he’d quietly retrieve the bowls and mixing utensils, humming along to ‘Baby Shark’ as his daughter rocked and giggled with glee at the song.
“Alexa, repeat song.” Luke spoke aloud as the song started coming to an end and his daughter’s bouncing had started to slow, but upon the repeat of the song she seemed to spark to life again and Luke grinned wider. If he could just keep her this happy for the rest of her life… There was a sort of sadness that lingered behind the happiness though, knowing that no matter what he did, no matter how hard he fought, there would always be things in this world that would try to bring his happy, bouncing baby girl down.
Pulling out a pot he’d quickly fill it with water and begin to heat the water, readying it to put a bottle in with some of the milk stored in the fridge for Chiara’s breakfast as he worked on his future ‘daughter sleep over’ pancakes, making breakfast for his incredible wide and warming up a bottle for their beautiful daughter.
Maybe it was a lazy Sunday morning. Maybe he could have done greater things with his life, but for Luke? Being able to support his wife and be a good man to his family?
That was enough.
