I am currently a waitress, at a Cabaret theatre so it's a little different. For the most part it's not too bad, but when we do shows like Evil Dead the musical and Texas Chainsaw the musical, we get a lot of rowdy, drunk younger guys who grope. So not okay with me.
Tips are good if you approach people with a smile right off the bat and if you're busy, let em know. As long as I tell my tables whats going on and get there stuff to them in a reasonable amount of time, they're ok.

i was a server for one summer for a chain restaurant. mortifying? i'm not sure... maybe the time i had a customer smack my ass and then give me a $20 tip. or the times i was sexually harassed by one of the cooks. plus it was fairly hard work, but it could be fun depending on the customers. of course the area i was doing it in wasn't so great, people for the most part were extremely rude and cheap and made my life hell no matter how nice or willing to do whatever they asked i was. i made $3.08/hr plus tips and a lot of times i would get no tip, or 10 cents, not because i sucked but because people were fucking shits. plus the restaurant would never order enough stock when there was a football game (we were next to a stadium) and then the rest of the weekend we'd be out of things like pepperoni and people would be screaming at the servers like it was our fault. but on the other hand, i did learn a lot about working as a team and i did get close to a few of my coworkers/managers, so sometimes if (on the off chance) we weren't having some kind of crisis, it was cool. plus i learned how to prepare some salads and stuff like that.

yes, it was absolutely mortifying. i lost almost all of my faith in humanity waitressing. bad/no tips, rude customers, sexual harassmant, patronizing bullshit, constant stress, on your feet all the time -- kind of makes the good parts not worth it. personally though, i have a hard time smiling at people i hate and working my ass off for people who don't appreciate it. i know some people are really personable and enjoy having conversations and meeting new and interesting people, i'm just way too bitter for that.
now on the other hand, oddly enough i loooove bartending - mainly for the fact that you're allowed to snark and you can give back as much shit as you take, and it feels like there's an art to it.
