I just read the entire Shopaholic series and it was great. Other than that, I never go wrong with any of Meg Cabot's books. My favorites are her "The Boy" series. Check out her website for info on her books :)

I haven't finished it yet, but I'm really enjoying Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Also The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster, and A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami.

i just finished
the hunger games
by suzanne collins and i HIGHLY recommend it. i read the summary and didn't think i would like it, but it's really good.
i'm also reading the uglies series by scott westerfeld, but i've only finished the first book and i'm waiting for the other one. SO, i know the first book is good.
i second the shopaholic series by sophie kinsella... it's awesome.

Seconding (thirding?) the Foer reccs. Also, "I Was Told There'd Be Cake" by Sloane Crosley or "Welcome to the Monkey House" by Kurt Vonnegut, if you're into short essays / stories.
