Delivered to the Appleby Archer:
A small oil painting of the night sky, seen as though looking up from the ground, with the moon three-quarters full and the branches of trees reaching up as if to touch the stars. An eagle perches in the branches of a nearby tree, and the Milky Way is visible in the sky despite the impossibility of that, between the moon and the viewer. There is a faint shadow on the face of the moon, almost like a silhouette.

It is less cheesy than it sounds.

Alongside the painting is the following note:
I hope this meets with your approval.

I'm glad you like it.

Are you looking forward to a weekend where you don't have to perform?

A little bit. It's a mixed blessing.

Everyone likes a day or weekend off, but it gets boring.

You could go to the gala tomorrow night? It's usually not boring, at least. And it's for a good cause.

I
I don't

I don't usually go to that sort of thing. Professional distance. Maintaining the secret identity and all.

I suppose I can see the logic in that.

Do you like the theatre?

Yeah.

I mean, I don't get to go often. Can be expensive and they don't pay us nearly as much as they pay you folks on the brooms.

Not that I mind. I mean. You obviously deserve to get paid more. I just Yeah.

[enclosed: three tickets to A Midsummer Night's Dream]

My family has a membership at the Morgana Theatre in London; my father loves Shakespeare. Take some friends, if you like. The cast they've got for this production is very good.

You really
I can't

You don't have to shower me with gifts, you know.

I know.

I like making people happy. I can't really do much else. All I'm really good at is art and Quidditch and having more money than I really know what to do with. So I give people things because I know that a lot of the time, luxuries and indulgences are the first things to go when you're trying to decide what you should be spending money on. But if it's a gift from someone else, it's not wasting your money.

But if you want me to stop, I will.

It's not that I WANT you to stop

I just feel bad that I can't give you anything in return.

You're talking to me. Really you, without the jokes and the puns.

I don't think I can really explain how much that's worth.

Well I mean. The puns are me, too. They don't write them for me.

But I know what you mean.
Don't mention it.

I know you make them up. But they're a part of the Archer persona. And I like them, but I like that it seems like you don't feel like you need to keep up that persona when we're talking.

A lot of people don't look past the way I am on the pitch. And I suppose I'm asking for that, but it's nice to talk to someone who isn't afraid of me.

It's never personal, at least? Not like some of the other players. It's just a game for me.

It's a game. People get intense on the pitch. I think it's a pretty safe bet that most Beaters don't enjoy knocking people out just for knocking them out.

Sometimes people expect me to be violent off the pitch as well. I don't know what's worse; when they're glad I'm not or when they're disappointed.

I'm sorry; I don't know why I'm going on about it. Someone said something earlier this week that's been bothering me, I suppose. And I don't really talk about this sort of thing with anyone else.

Sometime I might like to take you to the theatre myself. But not for a while, I don't think. Not until you're comfortable telling me who you are, and I don't want to rush that. I like just exchanging these letters, anyway. It feels a bit like something out of a novel.

I'm glad you like them. I'm finding them a nice way to wind down at the end of the day. A bit like having a diary that talks back to me.
