How it had begun, Jarvis couldn't actually pin down to a moment. Tony was always talking. His mouth moved constantly, and often independently of his brain, and Jarvis more or less suspected that at some point he'd forgotten that the only other living, breathing creature nearby wasn't meant to be on the receiving end of communication- not so much as eye contact and definitely not actual, verbal acknowledgment. He'd been taught to avoid looking directly into anyone's faces, the better to skip awkward temptation and seeing disdain or horror in anyone's eyes, and he'd always been conscientious in maintaining that poise.
Don't look up. Don't make eye contact. Don't let anything show on your face. Don't make any noise. Serve quietly and completely, and then be furniture; present, useful, but not intrusive and never human.
But Tony talked and at some point Jarvis had lost track of not reacting, and he'd made a noise or arched his brows, and now they were here. With Tony presenting him a voice, and Jarvis trying to figure out how to respond without looking ridiculous and soppy. Gratitude was fine, but overt displays made Tony uncomfortable... and Jarvis had to admit, he wasn't crazy about them either. They were undignified. And moist. No one liked that. Even the word was unpleasant.
Surprised at having Tony so close, Jarvis obediently held the device out at a distance that would make it easier for the other man to manipulate. He didn't want to hand it over, even if he knew it was made for him and wouldn't be taken away. If he remained careful and exercised more than his usual discretion, he could keep this and use it with Tony and no one would be the wiser. He hummed, low and in the back of his throat, and studied the display as it shifted seamlessly between keyboard and calendar. Another hum as he manipulated it in reverse, fingers placed just so to call the keyboard back. "I want it," he assured, quickly. "It's amazing."
His mouth twitched, the slow hint of a smile tugging up his lips at the corners. "Don't let it go to your head. I'm still cross about the piano."
