Bucky finished half the coffee before picking up his own plate, cutting off precise little pieces with the fork to eat, seemingly watching the plate more than her.
There was a strange kind of familiarity between him and Natasha lately. Bucky didn't have a name for it, but it had started that day when she'd come to his house. Or maybe it started before that, and he just hadn't really been together enough to realize it. He was never quite sure of himself with her - but he felt comfortable around her anyway. A discomfort that was comfortable, even if that didn't make any damn sense. Maybe he just felt a little kindred to her. They were wanted for different things, she was on a different level than him - but they shared some of the same life, anyway.
Whatever that little thread of connection had been between them when they started talking about his bookshelves over food she brought him though ... Bucky didn't feel it now. He felt off balance and not like his head was out of the right space. Just ... wrong. "Yeah," he said slowly, not quite looking at her either - smile half there and eyes just off center from meeting hers when he looked up - a trick Bucky used when he was out too, but didn't put together with using now. "Think it might involve fucking the unicorn, but she might be able to turn into a person. Or he. Not sure which it is yet. Not sure if that makes it better or worse. Least the one with the centaurs was honest about it."
Bucky smiled at the pun, eyes rolling. But he ate through the eggs, trying to figure out what was wrong.
He didn't think it was him, he thought it was her. Not that she was wrong just ... hell. Maybe she really wanted him the hell out, but couldn't yet? And he didn't want to ask, because she hadn't wanted him to push when she said she felt fine. She'd just wanted him to take that and not pretend like he knew better. He didn't want to do that again. Maybe she was fine and she just wanted space she couldn't have yet. "I could go," Bucky offered suddenly, awkward. "Probably another hour or so before I should leave, maybe, but I could just go hang out in the living room, you could have in here, or your bedroom. Pretend I'm not here and I'll take myself out when the time's up." He looked at her squarely finally to check her reaction. "If you want," Bucky said quietly.
