"Good," Steve said, voice soft. He was smiling, and the smile carried over into his voice, leaving him sounding warm and happy. He wished he could believe that the rest of this conversation would go just as smoothly, but he had a sinking suspicion that wasn't going to be the case.
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, pausing to rub at the back of his neck. "I wanna take you out again," he said, and now there was a rougher quality to his voice, because this had been weighing on him ever since his exchange with Natasha.
"I wanna take you out, but I don't know if it's a good idea," he finished. "Have you really thought about what that means, to be closely associated with me?" Because he'd been doing nothing but thinking of that these past few days, and so far nothing particularly positive had come to mind. Natasha - hell, even Stark and Bucky - they'd all made it pretty damn clear that Steve was heading for trouble and was likely to drag everyone around him down with him.
And if Steve was taking Peggy out on dates, kissing her goodnight outside her door, well... that moved her right up to the top of the list, didn't it.
