"Like going to see a doctor, maybe?" Steve fired back, already shorter than he should have been, considering her current state. She was a mess, and when Steve got a glimpse behind her at her apartment, his stomach turned, taking in the destruction. It looked like she'd been attacked, which didn't - he'd seen her during her Games, he knew how good she was at taking care of herself. How had this happened? Unless someone had caught her off guard, but even then...
He took a deep breath, trying to dial back his irritation, but that was easier said than done when she was scowling at him like that. "Look. I had a question for you, but - " But now wasn't the time, this was so obviously not the time, but he also couldn't possibly walk away from her right now, not when she looked like this. It didn't seem like there was anyone else around, and this didn't seem like a good time to leave her alone. Unless Clint was on his way, maybe, but even then, Steve didn't think he'd be willing to take her word for that.
"Can I come in?" Steve asked, shoulders squared, the set of his jaw pure stubbornness. Because whatever they ended up talking about, he was certain the hallway outside her door wasn't a good spot for it.
