Stuck in an elevator with Tony. There were probably some people who would give a kidney for that kind of opportunity, but Peggy couldn't see Steve tolerating the experience, much less enjoying it. The way he spoke wasn't with exasperation or distaste, though, so perhaps it hadn't been a total wash. Then again, if Tony were sober and Steve intoxicated, that might go a ways to explaining things- enough of a reversal to allow them to be civil for a change, anyway. She made mental note to check with Tony later, just in case.
Much later. He'd been in a sour mood the night before and doubtless he wasn't much happier today. Peggy couldn't see that improving until he could depart, which she imagined would go a distance to improving the dispositions of ever Victor in the hotel (and some of the associated staff as well).
Looking back to Steve when his tone shifted toward something less apologetic, she frowned. Friend or not, it hadn't been appropriate to step into his room when he was only wearing a towel. Peggy genuinely had known better, but she'd allowed concern to outweigh good sense and that wasn't like her.
Just like it wasn't at all Steve's nature to... to do what he had. It hadn't been force, but it had been uncomfortable. Swallowing at the recollection, Peggy nodded. "I'd never have thought to see you like that," she began, color chasing across the apples of her cheeks. Shared embarrassment, she supposed. Finding words to explain how she'd felt, it wasn't easy. "I want to be perfectly clear, in case... in case there's any misconception between us, Steve. You said that you," and she hesitated, lips pursing. "Earlier, you said it wasn't about... that... for you."
Peggy's fingers twitched, fidgeting with the loose, gauzy fabric of her dress. Honestly, she could do this. She could. They were adults. "You're being honest with me, aren't you? This isn't about sex. That was entirely due to your state last night." Yesterday, she would've scoffed at anyone suggesting otherwise about Steve, but now she wanted to be sure. Hearing it from him, that would help.
