Having a conversation about this was, probably, the last thing in the entire world Steve wanted to do, but when Peggy was using that particular tone, there was nothing for it but to fall into line and do as she asked. Steve didn't generally take orders very well, but Peggy had always managed to be an exception to that, even though Steve had a feeling that still didn't happen as often as she would have preferred.
Steve did, briefly, entertain the notion of fleeing as soon as she turned her back, but that wasn't going to fix anything, he knew. And wasn't the point of all this fixing things, even if she did insist on making him sit through what promised to be a truly mortifying conversation before granting him forgiveness?
So he followed her into the room, letting the door swing shut behind him, though he pointedly refrained from locking it this time. His cheeks flared up at the memory of that from last night, too. It had been so obvious, what he'd been gunning for - hell, what he'd practically been expecting - and it made him sick to think about it now, the position he'd put Peggy in. And the thing that made it all so much worse was his worry that maybe, deep down, that's who he was. What if whatever he'd been drugged with was just a way to lower inhibitions, get someone to give in to whatever instincts they'd tried to bury? It just didn't seem possible that a drug could make someone act so contrary to their character.
Which might mean, perhaps, that deep down, Steve wasn't nearly so honorable as he'd always striven to be.
He finally moved away from the door, though he didn't go too far, hovering near a wall and not trying to get anywhere near Peggy. Steve was determined to keep his distance right now, as that seemed the safest bet for everyone involved.
"You, uh - you didn't get dosed with anything, did you?" Steve asked after a moment. Peggy had seemed every inch herself last night, but it sounded as if there might have been drugs that did different things, which meant she might have encountered something with less obvious effects.
