WHO: Tonks and Sirius
WHAT: Tonks gets a little dating advice from a dubious source.
WHEN: Spring 2016
WHERE: 12 Grimmauld Place
Tonks continued to smile at something Remus had said for a good while after he had exited the kitchen. It wasn’t until her cheek muscles began to protest that she realized she should probably rearrange her face--still, a faint smile continued to tug at her lips as she stared absent-mindedly down at the Daily Prophet. Since she was in no way actually reading the paper, Tonks readily sensed Sirius staring at her from across the table. When she looked up, his expression was bemusedly astonished, chin cradled in the palm of his hand. “Do you fancy Remus?” he asked her bluntly. Tonks blinked several times in rapid succession, sitting up a bit straighter in her chair at the accusation--she was so stunned by what had come out of Sirius’ mouth, she didn’t quite know how to react. Several beats too late, Tonks forced a strange, guttural sort of laugh that sounded utterly alien to her ears. She also did a number of strange things with her eyebrows, not sure if she should raise them or furrow them at this obviously preposterous inquiry. “What? No, of course not!” Tonks said, though she had to speak over Sirius’ boisterous laughter. He leaned back in his chair and shook his head. “Wow,” he remarked. “You’re a bloody awful liar. Aren’t you Aurors supposed to be suave and stealthy and shit?” Tonks cleared her throat, feeling heat gather in her cheeks which she attempted to counteract with her metamorphmagic. “You have to score a 130 on the stealth exam to pass, I got 131,” she explained. “Clearly,” he retorted. Tonks attempted to simply will this conversation into nonexistence by looking back down at the Prophet, but she could tell that Sirius was still watching her. “Anyway,” she said, as if that would end it. “Anyway...” Sirius echoed. Tonks looked back up and met his eyes again; Sirius raised an eyebrow at her. She’d often wondered what it would be like to have siblings or cousins she was actually close with, it had always seemed like good fun--in this moment, though, Tonks didn’t think she liked it much at all. Finally, she cracked and rolled her eyes. “Look, I don’t need you to tell me how ridiculous it is, I’m already well aware,” she muttered, surprised to feel a sudden pang of anger. “Why’s it ridiculous?” Sirius asked cooly. “Because he’s like...a real adult!” Tonks pointed out, exasperated. “As opposed to you, who’s...what? A fake one?” “Basically!” Tonks said, embarrassed now. “That’s essentially what my entire twenties have felt like thus far.” The irritation returned as Sirius smirked, his expression oozing bemusement and mockery. “Tonks, you’re an Auror, a vigilante, you pay your own bills, you own your own flat...what more do you think there really is to it?” “It’s more of a state of mind, I think.” “Trust me, if the state of mind part is a deal-breaker, then most of us are fake adults, myself chief among them.” “Hmmm,” was all Tonks could manage as she looked back down at her unread paper, not sure how that was supposed to make her feel any better. Tonks could still feel Sirius looking at her. “What?” she spat. “Do you really need me to say it? So maybe I do fancy Remus a bit. Satisfied?” Sirius shrugged. “How satisfied I am depends on what you do about it,” he said. “You’ve got yourself an uphill battle. Remus is extraordinarily talented at shutting people out, but…” Sirius paused in a rare moment of consideration, his eyes cast upwards as if cataloging through a file of observances. “He does kind of light up around you. It won’t be easy, but it could be interesting.” Tonks’ cheeks reddened too quickly for her to do anything about them--she didn’t quite know what to say to his bizarre encouragement. She cleared her throat. “Anyway." “Anyway.” |
