It was a shame that Robards had situated himself as he had, directly in the line of fire and stubbornly so. Vic honestly wanted to see how he’d fare against Nott. Intimidating and potentially eliminating his supporters seemed too close to cheating, and that was so typical of purists. So boring. Almost as boring as the baffling obsession with bloody Tinworth. But she did as she was told. Vic had spent the last several weeks listening to former-Auror-Dearborn rant about the Death Eaters. His brother’s name popped up enough, the pair of them part of a larger circle of whinging do-gooders. It made Vic’s selection an easy one. So she stood in Jeremy Dearborn’s living room, bored and impatient for him to get home. Jeremy’s kind, jolly neighbour lay just behind her, blood seeping from the strategically placed cuts, conscious enough to moan in pain. At this rate he’d be dead before Dearborn even arrived, and what an even bigger waste of her time that would be. Was the whole thing a touch over the top for a simple intimidation? Maybe. But Vic lacked the finesse for pretty threats and something told her words wouldn't mean much to Dearborn. Might as well drive a point home that went beyond an election. “Oh good,” she huffed when the front door finally opened, straightening out of her lean against a bookshelf. “You’re home.” The Death Eater’s greeting was met with silence as Jeremy froze a few steps into the room. It was only when he heard the click of the door closing behind him that he blinked, eyes focusing on the scene in front of him. The part of him that felt like surely he was hallucinating twisted viciously with the rise of panic at the sight of the Death Eater, his neighbour, and the blood that was starting to pool on his floor. Somehow, despite everything, Jeremy hadn’t really been expecting to come home one day to a Death Eater in his house. Everything felt impossibly slow as he moved his hand to his wand, aiming it with a calm precision that came from years of dealing with high pressure medical situations. But what he didn’t know, exactly, was what to do now. “Get out,” he said as he took a few steps towards Mr. Quince, his neighbour who had only ever been nice and definitely didn’t deserve any of this. Vic gave a sharp smile behind her mask, unconcerned about the wand. “No. You and your brother have a lot to say these days,” she commented. Quince breathed wetly, gasping. “It’s good to be politically active. Civic engagement is so important. Tell me, who are you voting for, I’d love some advice.” “That’s what this is about? What the fuck is wrong with you?” Jeremy replied hotly, the words out of his mouth before he could think twice about them. He continued to move towards his neighbour, his wand shifting from the Death Eater so he could aim a quick spell to try and stop the bleeding. Telegraphed, Vic deflected the attempt. “Tinworth currently,” she retorted. A bald man in a robe ruining her Monday, mostly. She shot off a quick blasting hex, more as a warning than to actually harm. “You do far more to hurt than heal every time you and your lot open your stupid mouths. How's this for actions and consequences?” Swearing, Jeremy quickly cast a shield against the flying remains of his ceiling and wall behind him but he still found himself ducking behind a chair to use for cover, farther away from Mr. Quince than he needed to be. He could see the pool of blood getting bigger and the man’s breathing becoming more and more laboured. “It seems to me you guys need to find some new things to worry about!” With a flick of his wrist, he aimed at the bookcase behind the Death Eater in an attempt to make it topple over onto her. Vic hadn't seen the book shelf, but in anticipation for a hex flown at her, her shield was up, stopping the wooden frame just inches from her shoulder. Well now Vic was annoyed. The bookshelf exploded and shards of wood were flung out towards the healer. “I think it's you who need to start worrying, Dearborn. This?” She gestured to the bleeding man on the floor. “Was nothing. I happen to know of three people not too far from here that might do a better job of convincing you and your entire gang of justice for all! that it’s far better to do what you’re told. Less blood that way, you know?” She gestured widely. “Vote however you like, but if Nott isn't sitting in that Wizengamot seat, I think you can connect the dots.” His shield had gone up too late to avoid all the remains of his bookcase, a few shards slicing at his face and the arm he was using to try and protect it. But it wasn’t serious, not in the way the situation with his neighbour was very serious, and Jeremy could feel his panic only heightening. “Got it! Nott for Wizengamot. Anything else?” “That didn’t sound very sincere.” Pointedly, Vic shifted to the left so that the pooling blood wouldn't touch her boot. “What’s Corner’s house number again...” “No!” Jeremy replied sharply as his mind raced through the possible outcomes of this scenario. But he could tell that the Death Eater wasn’t going to let him heal his neighbour until she’d gotten what she wanted, assuming she didn’t intend to kill them both in the end anyway. He’d cross that bridge when he came to it. “Look, your message here is loud and clear. I get it! I’ve got it!” He looked at the body on the floor that didn’t seem to be breathing very much at all anymore, and he could feel his own heart practically beating out of his chest. “I won’t be a problem just let me help him.” Whether or not that was a lie was something Jeremy could deal with later. If there was a later. “Super,” Vic drawled dismissively. She didn’t bother taking a look at the poor man on the floor as she brushed remnant wood dust from her robe. “Glad we could come to an agreement, as sincere as I’m sure it is. Let your friends know to expect much of the same. Really, I’m just looking out for you.” She apparated away. A second later, Jeremy was across the room and kneeling next to his neighbor, casting frantic spells to stabilize him enough for apparition. Mr. Quince was still alive — barely — but it was going to be a fight and Jeremy didn’t feel like there was a whole lot of that left at the moment. But he apparated them both to Mungo’s all the same. |
