Ministry rolls out new Diagon wards to protect Wandless after recent abductions By Byron Kettleburn Ministry spellcasters took to the streets of Diagon Alley earlier today to implement new safeguards to protect the alley's Wandless population against a rash of abductions. Earlier this week, more than a dozen Wandless were lured away from the alley by two unidentified individuals. This weekend, three more Wandless were abducted from the street despite efforts to intervene. DMLE Head Corban Yaxley called the events a "senseless tragedy" and a "terrible way to treat creatures in such a vulnerable position." The creatures themselves, possessing a surprising intelligence and diversity of opinion, called the abductions "creepy" and "troubling". These two instances are not the first abductions they've endured since September. Despite healthy debate among the Wandless as to the fates of those taken, they have begun leaving trinkets, photos and other mementos at the site of the first abduction. Despite the opinions of several passers-by that the memorial constituted little more than a pile of rubbish, the Wandless felt it important to honor the memories of those lost and to leave a token to wish them well, wherever they are. But far from ignoring the chilling news, the abductions have prompted swift action from the Ministry. In addition to repairing the damage done to Diagon Alley over the weekend, the spellcasters' work includes the construction of an anti-apparition and anti-porkey barrier surrounding the Wandless quarter. Visitors will no longer be able to apparate or portkey in or out of designated Wandless areas. New wards will also directly alert authorities if a Wandless is removed from these areas. When asked about the state of these areas, Yaxley claimed they are the "most effective way to keep Diagon Alley safe until the Wandless can be properly removed." When approached for comment, the Minister's Office agreed, stating, "The Wandless will now be protected by the best spellwork the Ministy has to offer. The changes we've made to the ward structures will ensure more harmony between the Wandless and all Diagon Alley residents." A representative declined to comment on the ongoing squalor of designated Wandless areas except to say, "We know it's a problem and we're working to contain it." Ar. Yaxley requests that any information related to the missing Wandless be directed to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement as soon as possible. |
