✸ The Wizarding World's Beguiling Broadsheet of Choice ✸ |
Another Moment With Madam Umbridge By Narcissa Malfoy In only eleven days, the Muggleborn Registration Commission has managed to divide Wizarding Britain. It’s a controversial enactment that witches and wizards either love or hate. The Daily Prophet is joined again by Madam Dolores Umbridge to find out exactly what it means to be the most polarising woman in Wizarding Britain and what her commission has accomplished. Narcissa Malfoy: It must be a relief to have the deadline behind you, Madam Umbridge. Dolores Umbridge: Yes, it is a relief not to have the looming deadline overhead. I felt the pressure to ensure the paperwork was done, there were some long nights but worth it. NM: Do you feel you accomplished what you set out to do with the commission? DU: I think I am on the way there. Ultimately, we do have some stragglers who have decided to not register. Until that is complete I won’t say it is complete, but I am pleased with what has been accomplished thus far. NM: And how do you feel about the negativity surrounding the commission? That must be difficult to hear. DU: It was difficult to hear, particularly from Ministry employees who I feel should know that the Ministry only has the best interest of the magical world in its intention. It saddened me to think so many people opposed an action to bring safety to the people. Though it is worth doing, so we persevere through all the negative to achieve the positive results. NM: Can you tell us what will happen with the commission now that its initial stage is over? DU: Yes, the question on everyone’s mind. The commission will be working on completing the register with the information collected. Ideally, we will get those last few stragglers as they are caught or come forward of their own accord. A smaller commission staff will be helping with the investigation process. NM: What of those who registered? And those who haven’t? Can you tell us a bit more about them? DU: Those who have registered have been requested to the turn their wands in, pending investigation. They have not been detained, for now. We feel it necessary to remove such a dangerous tool from someone who has stolen the magic to wield it. We will aim to work quickly through the investigation process to take these criminals to legal proceedings for theft of magic. As for those who have not registered by the deadline. They have been marked as fugitives, Undesirables. Rather than seeking a fair investigative process they have decided to jump right to criminal status. They will be treated as such. Once captured they will need to face the letter of the law in addition to the same investigation to prove theft of magic. With these sort I don’t think it will be as difficult to prove, for why did they run if they were not guilty of a crime. NM: Undesirables? Like Harry Potter? DU: In a way, they surely share his company as he is Undesirable number one. NM: You mentioned Ministry employees before. Several Department of Magical Law Enforcement employees seemed especially argumentative during this process. Do you have any reservations regarding their involvement in these measures? DU: Part of me worries about their commitment to the duties of the Ministry if they are so vocal about their displeasure. The other part of me trusts in the abilities of the Department to do the right thing and complete the tasks as indicated by the Ministry Authority. They will surely show the process the respect it deserves. NM: There have been reports of a growing number of homeless, wandless individuals in several wizarding locations. What do you make of that? DU: I think it is unfortunate there is a growing number of homeless, but the wandless is a necessary step. If one is the result of the other, then they should have thought about that before stealing magic. NM: Is there anything you would do differently? DU: No. Absolutely not. I think this went smoothly. NM: Now, Madam Umbridge, will you be going on holiday any time soon? You certainly seem to deserve it! DU: I have thought a break was in order, I turned fifty just this past month. Though at a time where the magical world seems tense, it does not feel appropriate that Senior Staff take vacation. I will be focusing on my work and take vacation at a more appropriate time. NM: A very happy belated birthday to you! But that is an admirable stance and surely why the Ministry continues to trust you with such important tasks. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us again. I’m sure our readers appreciate it. DU: It has been my pleasure, and thank you. |
