The fact that it had been remarkably easy to breach the premises of the daycare center made Lucius even more certain that educating Draco at home had been the right choice. Malfoy Manor, compared to this place, was protected by the best wards, even should the possibility of someone wanting to breach them occur, and thus, he and Narcissa did not have to worry about Draco being kidnapped at any time of day. Then again, he mused, as he — glamoured to look unrecognizable with his new auburn hair and a cap of all things — let the Imperius off the woman at the front desk and strolled past her slumped body, the parents of the children here probably hadn't worried about that possibility either. Given a choice (and he wasn't), Lucius wouldn't have devoted today to this plan, even if Jasper Williamson hadn't been annoying recently. He felt slightly uneasy about involving a child in this scheme, especially because he was only three, but he reasoned that it was ultimately fine because he wasn't intending on harming the child. Lucius just needed him to pass along a message to his father. The girl who opened the door when he knocked looked inquisitively at him. "Who did you say you were again?" "Luca's uncle," Lucius lied, adjusting his hat and bringing out a winning smile. The girl — Miss Lydia, supposedly, according to her name tag — frowned, searching in her memory for the person in question. "His uncle? I'm afraid we don't have that on the record —" "It's all right. I only have something to give to him." "It's naptime right now, so I'm afraid we can't wake him up, Mr. Williamson." Lucius grimaced internally at the sound of the name. Lucius nodded in the appearance of understanding. "Of course. That's no problem. Can I just slip it into his jacket?" "I —" Lydia looked behind her, seeming to confer with someone. "We weren't aware of Luca having an uncle, and it's against policy to just accept things from strangers — from unknown relatives! I do apologize," she said, sounding genuine. "Oh, please, it's only a toy —" Lucius brandished the toy in question, a miniature kid-friendly broom figurine, and offered it to her. "He's wanted this for a long time and I —" His voice lowered, in embarrassment. "Well, I haven't been able to afford it until now and I don't want to be a disappointment." He tried to look appropriately pitiable. It must've worked because Lydia's face fell in sympathy. "Well, of course, perhaps —" The door opened and another woman stepped out. "Lydia, what is taking you so long —" She noticed Lucius. "Is something the matter?" "This is Luca's uncle. He wants to stop in and give him a gift, but the policy, you know..." Lydia trailed off hopefully, "It is a really sweet gesture, I was thinking —" "Lydia." Lydia's face fell. "We simply can't make any exceptions, Mr. Williamson," (another internal wince), "but we'll let him know you stopped by." Well, that wouldn't do. Lucius was tired of the charade and even more tired of the effort he had already exerted into this project. Though he had hoped he could accomplish this without magic (the Imperius, of course, didn't count), it seemed that it was the only course of action that would speed things up. "I understand," he sighed. "Confundo!" Lydia wobbled on her feet for a second before he Stunned her. "Mr. Williamson!" The other woman gasped, scrambling for her own wand. "Imperio!" Her hand dropped and she looked back at him with a blank stare. There. Much easier. "When you go back inside, give this," he handed her the toy, "to Luca. Tell him it's a gift from his father." She nodded and closed her hand around it. "Wake up this one before you do." And although she had no reaction to it, aside from the forced assent, Lucius thanked her for her cooperation. Perhaps it wasn't a wasted day after all. |
