DUEL IN DIAGON By Gwendolyn Vane Diagon Alley’s newest residences, the Wandless, were witness to an altercation yesterday between several people which allegedly started over a sandwich. The addition of the Wandless to Diagon Alley came after the Ministry’s announcement of the Muggleborn Registration Act. Muggleborns who have been judged to have stolen magic and subsequently had their wands removed from them are now living rough and begging in the alley. Some witnesses say that the altercation took place as Remus Lupin, a former Hogwarts professor, was attempting to feed the wandless and stopped by Lucius Malfoy and Rabastan Lestrange. The duel was short-lived and has been labelled as “self-defence” by Malfoy. Malfoy stated that he was attacked by Lupin for offering some advice about how to be a good, law abiding citizen which was rudely ignored. An onlooker, Catherine McCarthy, said, “Oh, I don’t know who started it all I know is one moment we were just shopping and the next spells were flying everywhere! It was awful. I had my niece with me and I was very frightened for her.” Indeed, it appears that many were frightened — the wandless ran and many of them were reluctant to make any comment on the fight itself. “I saw one of them there men trying to help us and then the other ones weren’t best pleased about it,” said a Wandless who wishes to remain anonymous. “I think it were a bit much to be honest. It was a sandwich, not a diamond he was giving us.” A recurring feature of accounts is a mysterious woman who aided Lupin in the duel. There have been many conflicting reports about who this woman might be — “she looked just like Natalia O’Hanlon!” one onlooker said, but the socialite strongly denied being in Diagon when questioned. Instead, many accounts have her as a blonde, a brunette, with heights ranging from four foot five to “possibly six foot three,” from a Barney Turner. Although her identity is not known, Malfoy is insistent that she tried to kill him and appeared to be very taken aback by her use of violence. No major injuries seem to have been sustained from the duel, although law enforcement and healers both attended to the scene. Diagon Alley was not damaged by it — many were quick to point out that Malfoy aided in the clean up, in an act of charity and civic mindedness. Although order was quickly restored, the altercation left a bitter taste in the mouths of many onlookers. “I’m just glad no one got badly hurt because of us,” one of the wandless said. “We don’t need that here.” This sentiment is echoed by many of the wandless and first responders. “Hopefully, nothing like this will happen again,” said one onlooker. “I don’t want to have to worry about coming to Diagon now. They’re really a menace here.” Although some shared these thoughts, there were others who were more sympathetic to the wandless. Regardless, the wish to keep calm in the city’s foremost magical shopping street resonated with everyone. There are currently talks to increase patrols in the area. |
