WHO: The Cadwalladers
WHAT: Discussions about the future
WHEN: Tonight
WHERE: Brazil
WARNINGS: I swear we've had this written for days and were always planning to post it tonight
After dinner and the four or five glasses of water she drank along with it, Nora made excuses with her parents that she was feeling tired and that they (with a quick but significant look at Rhys) were just going to call it an early night. She'd spent most of the meal preoccupied anyway, because after getting home from the shop, her mother pulled her aside to talk about her brother, then her father pulled her the other way to help him prepare dinner, then the puffskeins needed to be fed, and the humans needed to be fed, and all she wanted was time to talk to Rhys and a few minutes to herself. Snugly closing the door to the guest room they'd been calling their own since they came to Brazil so many weeks before, Nora bit her lip as she turned to look at Rhys. "We should sit down," she said, gesturing vaguely toward the bed. "I think we need to talk." Rhys quickly took a seat, looking concerned as his brain immediately began to imagine all manner of horrible things that could need talking about. “Nora? What’s wrong?” he asked. It had been relatively calm—aside from Baz’s run-in with a Death Eater—these past several weeks. He supposed it was only a matter of time before something newly-worrying came about. "Nothing's wrong!" Nora insisted. "It's not—nothing's wrong." She sat down beside him, but just as quickly got back up and moved to the dresser where she'd dropped her purse when she got home that afternoon. Before she grabbed the bag, though, she turned back to Rhys and launched into an explanation that spilled out of her too quickly for her to stop and think. "So, I know you know I'm usually pretty on top of things and consistent and that. But with everything that's gone on the last few days, I didn't even notice things were … behind? But this morning, I realized … and the last couple of weeks I've been feeling a little off and I figured it was just the stress and the move and it's a lot hotter here, you know? So I thought I was just adjusting because, you know, we're not even really trying yet, we're just not not trying and it just didn't really occur to me that it might happen this quickly but I'm pretty sure … Anyway I stopped by the shop today on the way home and …" She fished a scrunched-up brown bag out of her purse and, with one more hopeful, nervous look at Rhys, dumped the contents out on the bed. Out spilled five different pregnancy tests. Rhys’ eyes went wide as suddenly, unexpectedly, all of what she’d been explaining caught up with him. “Oh my god. Oh, Merlin,” he exclaimed, unsure of what to say here. It was not an unhappy surprise, but it was just that—a surprise. They hadn’t even not been trying for very long. He let out a nervous laugh of joy and disbelief. “Do you really think you might—I mean, what am I even saying here, you’re the Mediwitch, you would know… should we try them?” His smile was hopeful. Nora let out a laugh. "Well! You can try one if you'd like but I don't think it'd get the same result." She offered him one of the boxes. "The woman at the shop thought it was overkill, but I wanted to be sure!" Rhys chuckled and handed the box back. “It’s always good to be sure! This is something you want to be sure of!” He leaned in and gave her an eager kiss. “This is exciting! I had no idea this would happen so fast. How are you feeling?” "I feel …" Nora scrunched up her face, almost embarrassed. "I feel like I have to pee more than I've ever had to pee in my life. I'll be back in a minute." She scooped up the tests and disappeared into the bathroom. Five full tests and more than a little anxiety later, she reemerged, tests displayed in hand. A pair of lines. A plus symbol. A purple potion. A charmed, sparkling strip. 'Pregnant.' Nora grinned, but didn't say anything because she wasn't sure she could speak without crying. Rhys was ready to do more than enough babbling for both of them. “Oh my god, oh my god!” he exclaimed, though he was careful not to do it too loudly lest her parents hear too soon. He got up and draped his arms around her. “I love you! I love you so much!” he said, not bothering to hold back the happy tears as he gave her another enthusiastic kiss. “There are going to be three of us!” |
