WHO: The Cadwalladers
WHAT: A nice day out!
WHEN: Today! May 6, 2018
WHERE: On a boat
WARNINGS: No
As their boat drifted gently in a calming waters of the cove, Rhys finished laying out their picnic in the sun on the deck. He spread out the dishes and feast on the blanket, then poured them each a smoothie before topping it with some sliced fruit. Once he seemed satisfied that everything was perfect, he picked up his ukulele and began to strum a jaunty version of “Charming” by The Mermen—Nora’s favourite. “You can open your eyes!” he sung cheerily. Nora pulled her hands away from her eyes playfully. Her face lit up in delight at their little picnic as the waves rocked them gently back and forth. "Ahh!" she clapped her hands a couple of times, then leaned in over the ukulele to kiss Rhys. "Thank you! This is so sweet." He kissed her back gently. “Anything for you, my love. Happy birthday! Or should I say, parabéns pra você!” Rhys set down the ukulele and picked up his fruit smoothie, raising his glass. “To your continued happiness.” She grabbed her drink and clinked glasses. "To our continued happiness. What's mine is yours." She grinned and took a sip of smoothie before moving around the boat to nestle in next to him. After a long, comfortable moment between them, she took his hand and wove her fingers between his. Then, quietly, she asked, "Are you sure this is okay? After … before, out on the water and everything. If this is too much, we can go back in. Really." Their fingers entwined, Rhys gave her hand a squeeze. It hadn’t actually been that long ago, but already his ordeal felt like a distant nightmare. “I’m fine. I’m with you, that’s all that matters. I’m safe. We’re safe.” he said, giving her another peck on the top of her head. “How about you? Are you sure this is okay? How’s your stomach feeling?” "I'm good! I'm good," Nora said. "I think yesterday was just something I ate. And I didn't have a smoothie or any of this boat picnic food yesterday so we should be all set! This is … this is really nice, Rhys. It's so pretty here." “Is it? I hadn’t really noticed the scenery,” he said cheekily, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek and tucking it behind her ear. “I’m glad the boat’s not making it worse, though. I’d worried. This is relaxing though—maybe we should buy a houseboat.” Nora laughed. "A houseboat's only going to have a thin layer between you and the Brazilian sun," she pointed out. "Speaking of, when's the last time you put on sunscreen?" Rhys wrinkled his nose, contemplative. “I don’t know—half an hour ago? Why, am I looking like a cooked lobster again?” He lifted his hands and examined them, hoping it was holding up. Nora shifted around to give her husband an appraising look. "Hmmm…" she teased. "No lobster yet, but the idea is to prevent that in the first place … are those sun freckles on your nose? That's cute." He chuckled. “Are there?” he asked, bringing a hand to his nose. “I feel cute. But that’s probably just because of the even-cuter company I’m keeping. Maybe if we keep this up, you can teach me to tan by osmosis.” "I'll see what I can do," Nora promised. She sipped at her smoothie and settled in again. "I don't know about a houseboat, but I can't wait until we've got a place. I mean, I love my parents, of course, but…" Rhys nodded in agreement. “I love them too, but I get you. It’d be nice to have a place to ourselves. It feels like it’s been forever, you know?” He sipped his own smoothie, stirring it a little with its tiny umbrella. “What would you like? Tell me about your dream home.” "Hmm," Nora considered. "I want someplace with a bit of a yard. Big enough to put our greenhouse in the back but small enough you can wave to your neighbours when you're getting home. Your turn, add a detail." “Hmmm, that does sound nice.” Rhys agreed. He thought about it for a moment. “I’d like a nice, spacious kitchen. And a nice dining room where we could have dinner/board game nights.” "A room for brewing," Nora added. "So...maybe not a houseboat after all. A little too much rocking, there." “That’s very true. We can always borrow a boat when we want to get out on the water. I think Pea and Carrot would appreciate having solid ground beneath them,” Rhys said. “We can start a new library. Stock it full of only the books we love.” Nora bit her lip. "What do you think?" she asked after a moment. "Three bedrooms? Four?" Rhys grinned. “Do you want four?” he asked softly. “If you want four, we’ll have four.” "What do you want?" Nora asked. He thought about it for a moment. “Four is a good, even number.” Nora laughed. "That's more than half a Quidditch team," she said. "What do you think, a beater, a keeper, and a couple of chasers? They could take Hufflepuff by a storm." She considered for a moment, and frowned. "Or Castelobruxo." Rhys laughed along with her, and grew quiet with her as well. “What houses does Castelobruxo have? Do they even have houses?” She shook her head. "It's not really set up the same," she said. "Mum's talked about it sometimes. Usually when she was complaining about something that Hogwarts was doing wrong. There's a lot more focus on herbology and magizoology here." She screwed her face into something like a smile. "We'll have to talk to her about it … when we're ready for that particular conversation." “Herbology and magizoology are very important,” Rhys said, determined to be positive even if he had always pictured the two of them having a poffle of little Hufflepuffs. “What do you think she’ll say? When, you know. We have that particular conversation someday?” "Honestly?" Nora said, "I think she's been expecting the conversation for awhile. I think probably a lot of people have." “Yeah? First Snell grandkids… they’re gonna be spoiled,” Rhys grinned. "Baz is going to freak out." “He’s going to be a cool uncle. Not as cool as Dafydd, though.” Nora laughed out loud. "Okay. We can let Dafydd believe that, anyway." Rhys smiled. “He’s also going to freak out. Though it’ll be nice, because eventually he’s going to have good news to freak out about. Do you think Pea and Carrot will be jealous?” "Yep, they sure will be," Nora said. She drank some more of her smoothie. "But it'll be worth it. Besides, it'll probably be awhile before it's even … you know, an issue." “Yeah, in the meantime, we can scrawl out silly potential names in our notebooks and enjoy what remains of our time alone as a happily-married couple,” Rhys said, and leaned in to give her another affectionate kiss on the cheek. “I love you, Nora. Happy birthday.” |
