WHO: Violet Slughorn & Everett Slughorn
WHAT: Siblings reconcile over the phone
WHEN: May 3rd
WHERE: [REDACTED]
WARNINGS: None
Although they’d been hexting back and forth since she first hexted him back on the 14th, and Everett had taken care to keep her updated on some of the latest news mentioned over the journal network, it was still a surprise for Violet to hear her phone ring and see Everett’s number in the call display. “Hello?” “Hey Vi,” Everett greeted. “I just had a big row with dad.” That got Violet’s attention. Normally, Everett was their father’s golden child. Their mother’s, too. It was their grandfather and great-uncle who favoured her. “Oh? What were you fighting about?” “About you.” Her older brother sounded uncomfortable with the admission. “He was complaining about how selfish you were being, and he said that your marriage to Dante was supposed to protect me from being pressured into Death Eater recruitment and keep the Averys happy.” “I thought you knew all that,” Violet said, surprise evident in her voice. “Dad guilt tripped me about it enough.” “I knew about not pissing off the Averys,” Everett admitted. “But you seemed to like Dante and he was protective of you, and it was distracting mum from pressuring me to propose to Caterina, so I didn’t say anything. I had no idea that dad was being such a manipulative arsehole.” “Dad wanted to protect you,” said Violet hesitantly. She wasn’t sure why she felt like she needed to speak in her father’s defense. Perhaps it was because she understood from personal experience how people could compromise their principles when the world around them was a scary place to live in. “At the expense of protecting you,” Everett retorted. “Anyway, I’m sorry you were pushed into something you weren’t comfortable with. Caterina wants me to live with her in Italy. I want you to stay with us. She was all in favour of it. She likes you.” “Thank you.” Tears were welling up in Violet’s eyes. As much as she’d been trying to treat her attempts at reaching out to foreign Ministries and journalists as a grand adventure, it was lonely. Especially when most of the people whom she’d called friends weren’t even trying to contact her, and the only friend who was, was still upset with her over having purist beliefs. The hext conversations with Dante had only served to reinforce that leaving was the right choice, even if she regretted the pain she'd caused him. “And...in case you don’t want to stay with Caterina and I for whatever reason, I called Austin. He said you can stay with him, and he won’t even tell Uncle Antoine and Aunt Celeste until you’re ready. Plus I got Leland to contact the Vulchanovs in Bulgaria without even telling Aunt Nikolina. Maybe some of the family’s failed at looking out for you, but some of us are ready to step up. You don’t have to do this alone, Vi.” It was at this point that Violet broke down and sobbed. Much as she’d chosen her son and her principles over everything and everyone else, she’d still missed her family dearly. She couldn’t put into words just how much it meant to know that some of them felt the same about her. Everett continued talking, albeit awkwardly. “Hey, it’s okay now. You may be a stubborn know it all pain in the arse of a little sister, but you’re my stubborn know it all pain in the arse of a little sister, and I’m going to help you. Also, I omailed you a file of a really disturbing podcast.” “What’s in the podcast?” Everett’s attempt at making Violet feel better via distracting her with new information to be curious about was a complete success. “A Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson that one of the kids secretly recorded. I thought I might have heard Ernie as one of the students in the background. Could have been. The students who were featured in it were Lavender Brown and Neville Longbottom from his year. Unforgivables are being used on students.” Violet gasped. “We knew the Carrows were using blood quills, but...Merlin, that’s a whole other level of awful.” “Yeah. Anyway, I hear mum coming and she’s probably going to try to get me to make peace with dad, and if I don't want to be financially cut off I probably should. I think we should ensure the Carrows are persona non grata in the European pureblood community once I leave, but omail me back and let me know whatever you want my help with while I’m still here. I’ll make it happen. Take care, Vi.” “Bye, Ev. Thanks for calling.” As she hung up the phone, Violet felt like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders. There was still so much to be done, but she wouldn't be alone as she tried to spread the word of all the awful things happening in Britain. Right now, that made all the difference in the world to her. |
